A new major meteor shower in late May 2014?
In 2014, an exciting new meteor shower – the May Camelopardalids – might come on the scene. And it’s coming up soon! It’s predicted for the night of May 23-24. This possible shower stems from Comet 209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004. If the predictions hold true, Earth might be sandblasted with debris from this comet, resulting in a fine display of meteors, or shooting stars on the evening of May 23, and the morning of May 24.

Syrian Government Says Maaloula’s Christian Sites Sacked By Rebels
ICC Note: A report by the Syrian government has highlighted the destruction of Christian sites in the ancient Christian village of Maaloula while it was held by rebel forces. Besides the destruction associated with normal fighting, churches have been defaced with extremist slogans painted on the walls, and paintings and other relics destroyed or missing from the churches.
Is China’s ‘Anti-Christian’ Campaign Widening?
China destroys statues as 'anti-Christian' campaign widens
ICC Note: Not long after the demolition of Wenzhou's Sanjiang church, a symbol of resistance to Chinese government’s religious policies in early April, Wenzhou city sees forcible removal or destroying of statues of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Biblical scenes. It is also revealed that more churches in this area will be facing or have already suffered some form of demolition work.
Christians in Captivity in Iran
Today is Saeed Abedini’s 34th birthday and it marks 589 days that the Iranian-American Christian has been imprisoned in Iran. While Saeed and dozens more Christians have been arrested because of their faith activities, Iranian Christians remain under the constant threat of arrest for nothing more than their religious beliefs.
More Than 300 Reported Dead After 12-Hour Boko Haram Raid on Nigerian Border Town
ICC Note: Early reports estimate more than 300 innocents dead following the raze and arson of Nigerian border town, Gamboru Ngala, by Boko Haram Militants Tuesday night. Senator Ahmed Zannah has claimed the attack lasted roughly twelve hours, during which suspected members of the Islamic insurgency allegedly gunning down villagers attempting to escape the town-wide arson. The attack follows an announcement Tuesday that the U.S. is assembling a team of military and law enforcement to be deployed to Nigeria to assist in the ongoing manhunt for more than 240 girls abducted by Boko Haram.
Wrongfully Imprisoned Chinese Pastor Continues to Receive Unfair Treatment in Court
Henan pastor's trial resumes with little cooperation from court; pastor's daughter held in black jail
ICC Note: In November, 2013, Pastor Zhang Shaojie from Nanle County, China, was tricked to meeting with government officials and then detained without any formal documents. His daughter soon fled out of Nanle County to secure a famous human rights lawyer to defend Pastor Zhang. However, the trial was delayed and, under the pressure from the court, Pastor Zhang’s family members were forced to fire the two lawyers who would otherwise lose their law license if they continued to defend them. In late April, 2014, the long-awaited trial resumed with new defense lawyers in place. This trial has been unfair from the start and the court has been uncooperative.
Christians in Sri Lanka Criticize Creation of Religious Police Unit
ICC Note: Last week, the government of Sri Lanka announced the creation of a special police united specifically mandated to deal with the increasing religious intolerance against Christians and other religious minorities. In recent years, the number of attacks on Christians and other religious minorities has skyrocketed coinciding with the rise of Buddhist nationalism in Sri Lanka. Many Christian leaders have criticized the creation of the religious police unit claiming that it is "useless" and "misleading." Whether the new police unit will be able to reign in Buddhist nationalist groups remains to be seen. Many Christian leaders feel that this will never happen because many of the Buddhist nationalist groups already enjoy the protection of the government.
A Christian Falsely Accused of Blasphemy Reclaims Dignity in Pakistan
ICC Note: A Christians falsely accused of blasphemy in Pakistan has reclaimed his own dignity and the ability to provide for himself and his family after receiving assistance to re-open his business. In 2013, the Christian was falsely accused of blasphemy by a Muslim neighbor after an argument over money. For over three months, the Christian and his family had to go into hiding. This time away from his business allowed the business to go under. After his story was brought to light, a foreign organization assisted the Christian leading to him being able to reclaim his dignity following the false blasphemy accusation.
Nepalese Christians Asked to “Reconsider their Faith” by Government
ICC Note: The government of Nepal has announced it will provide all its citizens with national identity cards which will include a section marking out an individual's religion. When this announcement was made, the government also said something that disturbed Christians living in Nepal. Before submitting their paperwork to receive the national identity cards, the government will "force" Christians and other religious minorities to "reconsider their faith." Many Christians feel this is a clear indication of the government's preference for the Hindu majority even though Nepal became a secular state in 2008. Please pray for Christians in Nepal.
As Boko Haram Pledges to Continue Kidnapping, the U.S. Pledges its Support
ICC Note: Following the abduction of 243 girls, as reported by the parents of those kidnapped, April 14, and the subsequent abduction of 8 additional girls May 5, the U.S. has met Boko Haram's pledge to conduct more abductions with a pledge of its own. Following the announcement of plans for the assembly of a team of military and law enforcement personnel by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, Obama told ABC News that Boko Haram has "been killing people ruthlessly for many years now and we’ve already been seeking greater cooperation with the Nigerians – this may be the event that helps to mobilize the entire international community to finally do something against this horrendous organization that’s perpetrated such a terrible crime." Today, the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) will be holding a press conference to discuss the abductions and U.S. assistance following a protest it held in front of the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Tuesday morning.
Nigerian-Americans Protest Outside Nigerian Embassies in New York, Washington, D.C.
ICC Note: Prior to the United States' announcement of its plan to assemble a team of military and law enforcement personnel to be deployed to Nigeria to assist the Nigerian state with finding band releasing more than 240 abducted school girls, Nigerians in New York and Washington, D.C. held protests in front of Nigerian embassies demanding more be done. In line with global outcry, perhaps most widely spread via the twitter hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls, the protests placed several demands on the Nigerian State, all of which in sum asked for a return o peace. Boko Haram, an Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated foreign terrorist Organization (GFTO) continues to ravage the country, abducting school children, attacking predominantly Christian villages, and perpetrating bomb attacks in the nation's capital city, Abuja, ahead of its scheduled hosting of the World Economic Forum.

Too Hot for Coffee
Brazil produces most of the planet’s coffee. Amid a drought and a reduced supply, can humanity still get its fix? Each year Brazil fills 55 million bags of coffee for the world. With January’s drought (which extended into February and then March), the number dropped by 20 percent. Brazil will be lucky to fill 45 million bags. A shortfall of ten million bags—each weighing 132 pounds—translates to around 42 billion cups of coffee that will never be brewed.
