We Americans…Must Be Americans
As Memorial Day passes, pause with me to celebrate what We Americans have in common.  There is a certain hypocrisy, if I may say so, enveloping us.  You can see it in the most recent resuscitation of class warfare, adversarial race relations and visible efforts to turn Americans, one and all, against each other.  I have had my fill of this hypocrisy.

Uzbekistan: Deacon and Wife Each Fined for “Illegal Religious Materials” in Their Home
Police raided Grigory Kasparov’s home in Uzbekistan, confiscating his personal Christian books and other “illegal religious materials” from his private home. Kasparov’s verdict imposed a heavy fine on him, and stated that his books had been destroyed before the verdict against him had even been reached. Kasparov’s wife Yelena was later fined under the same “offense,” despite her refusal to sign a self-accusation demanded by the police. Court officials were evasive when Forum 18 pressed for answers.

Christian Mother On Death Row for Her Faith Forced to Give Birth in Sudanese Prison
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, a Christian mother who, on May 15, was sentenced to 100 lashes and death on charges of adultery and apostasy, gave birth to her second child on the morning of her 100th day in prison.

Cameroon, Chad deploy 1,000 Troops to Nigerian Borders to “Wage War on Boko Haram”
ICC Note: Cameroon and Chad are sending 1,000 forces together to their respective borders with Nigeria to aid in the fight against Boko Haram, an Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) that poses an increasingly regional threat. Having committed attacks both in Nigeria and Cameroon, Boko Haram's campaign of terror, highlighted by its mass-abduction of more than 240 schoolgirls from Chibok and Warabe villages, has seen to the massacre of thousands in its pursuit to establish a separate Islamic state ruled by Sharia law. The United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Israel have all pledged support to the Nigerian Army to assist in the ongoing search for those abducted. President Obama utilized the War Powers Act last week to send 80 troops to Chad to operate Predator drone flights over the region.

Defense Ministry Spokesman Says Nigerian Military Knows Abducted Girls’ Location
ICC Note: Air Chief Marshal Badeh of the Nigerian Ministry of Defense said the military knows the location of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok and Warabe villages Monday at a press conference. Relaying fears that a rescue mission could result in tragedy, the Air Chief said, "We can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back." Throughout the press conference, the Air Chief rebuked critics of the army, threatening, "Nobody should say the Nigerian military does not know what it is doing," and asking the press to, "Just leave us alone." More than 240 girls were kidnapped from a secondary school in Chibok before eight more girls were taken by members of radical Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Boko Haram from Warabe Village less than a week later. They remain held as hostages, some having been forcefully married as "slave brides" and others having been sold into domestic and sexual servitude.

China: Zhejiang Government Set New Goals For Church Demolition
ICC Note: We translated the Chinese article to English and it discusses Zhejiang provincial government’s new goal of “Removing illegal construction” that targets church buildings and Christian gathering. According to the article, Wenzhou City of Zhejiang Province has achieved the quota of church demolition last month and YueQing City needs to meet the goal of “Removing illegal construction” of 50,000 square meters in June. In the meantime, Zhejiang government continues to stopping Christian gathering in house churches.

Syrian Christians Urge Pope to Work For Peace, Help Them Go Home
ICC Note: After Pope Francis’ visit to the Middle East, stories of Christians crying out for help are making their way through the noise. Syrian Christians particularly made their pleas known to the Pope, requesting support in being able to return to their village that was capture by Islamist rebels. As the Syrian war continues, Christians are continuously targeted at increasingly alarming rates.

Religious Freedoms Violated Amid Government Inaction in Chiapas, Mexico
ICC Note: In Chiapas, Mexico, violations of religious freedom are systematic, ongoing, and on the rise. Religious minorities are targeted by community leaders, and government inaction offers little relief. We stand with CSW, who has recently issued a report, urging the governments of Mexico and Chiapas to address these long-standing and serious infringements on religious liberty.

Sneaking into Syria
ICC Note: In the wake of the Syrian Crisis, Andrew Doran, a State Department employee, tells his story of sneaking in to the distraught country. His periodic visits to the Middle East are opportunities he uses to aid Christian villages and communities in an attempt to slow down the Christian Exodus. As the political situation worsens, persecution is further driving these Christians out and bringing more radical Islamists in.

Thailand: Religious Freedom At Risk Under Martial Law
Army imposes martial law in Thailand
ICC Note: Thailand's military seized power of the country in a coup, suspending the constitution. Whenever a country imposes martial law, religious freedom is highly possible to  be restricted. According to Vision Beyond Borders, there are over a thousand Christian ministries based in Thailand because of its freedom and comparative stability. Those ministries mainly reach out to the closed countries around Thailand, including Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and even China. Concern rises over the possibility that martial law may affect Christian ministries based in Thailand and impact the whole region.

Pope Francis Draws Shrinking Christian Flock in Holy Land
ICC Note: In the middle of the Pope’s visit to the Middle East, his visit to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem attracted one of the largest crowds the church has ever seen. Amidst the exodus of Christians in the region, many came from different areas of Israel to hear the Pope during his papal visit on Sunday.

Christians in India Still Concerned over Future of Religious Freedom
ICC Note: Following the victory of the BJP and Modi in India's national elections, many Christians are still expressing concern over the future of religious freedom in India.  Both BJP and Modi have a blighted history when it comes to the treatment of religious minorities and Christian leaders have been calling on the new leaders of the country to ensure that religious freedom for minorities will be protected and enforced. Please pray for the future of religious freedom in India.

Sudanese Christian Sentenced to Death Gives Birth to Second Child in Prison
ICC Note: Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, wife of an American citizen who was sentenced to 100 lashes and death for adultery and apostasy May 15, is now the mother of two children, having given birth this morning to her and her husband’s first daughter. According to Ibrahim’s lead defense attorney, Mariam and her husband Daniel Wani intend to name their daughter Maya. The baby’s reportedly healthy birth comes as relief amongst a long and arduous battle for Ibrahim’s freedom since her arbitrary arrest and detention February 17 this year.

Five Christian Families Rescued from Slavery in Pakistan
ICC Note: Christians and other religious minorities make up the bottom rung of Pakistan's Muslim majority society. Generations of discrimination and open social hostility has caused Christians to become some of Pakistan's poorest citizens. In many cases, Christians are forced to work in terrible labor conditions for very low wages. Last week, a Christian rights organization rescued five Christian families living in slavery at a Pakistani brick kiln. Bonded labor in Pakistan is not uncommon, especially for Christians who are particularly vulnerable. Please pray for more Christian families to be rescued from slavery in Pakistan.

Muslim Rights Activist Saves Christian from False Blasphemy Charge in Pakistan
ICC Note: Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws continue to be widely abused and are the root of many cases of Christian persecution in Pakistan. Last week, a Christian was again falsely accused of blasphemy in Pakistan. This time, a moderate Muslim human rights activist stepped in and saved the Christian from the false blasphemy charge. In many cases, a false blasphemy charge leveled against a Christian precipitates communal violence against the Christian and sometimes entire Christian communities. The intervention of this Muslim right activist was nothing short of heroic.

Scientists have found that the newborn brain cells in young rats that were successful at learning survived while the same brain cells in animals that didn't master the task died quickly.

Intertwined evolution of human brain and brawn
The cognitive differences between humans and our closest living cousins, chimpanzees, are staggeringly obvious. However, a new study suggests that human muscle may be just as unique. Scientists have found that metabolite concentrations evolved rapidly over the course of human evolution in two tissues: in the brain and, more surprisingly, in muscle.

Diamond planets may be more common than astronomers thought
Carbon-rich planets may be more common than previously thought, according to new research. Some of these planets, all located far beyond Earth's solar system, could contain vast deposits of graphite or diamonds, and their apparent abundance prompts new questions about the implications of carbon-intense environments for climate, plate tectonics, and other geological processes, as well as for life.

A habitable environment on Martian volcano?
The Martian volcano Arsia Mons may have been home to one of the most recent habitable environments yet found on the Red Planet, geologists say. The research shows that volcanic eruptions beneath a glacial ice sheet would have created substantial amounts of liquid water on Mars's surface around 210 million years ago. Where there was water, there is the possibility of past life.

Sunsets on Titan reveal the complexity of hazy exoplanets

Hybrid energy transfer system mimics process responsible for photosynthesis
Scientists have developed a new hybrid energy transfer system, which mimics the processes responsible for photosynthesis. From photosynthesis to respiration, the processes of light absorption and its transfer into energy represent elementary and essential reactions that occur in any biological living system. In a new study, researchers demonstrate an alternate non-radiative, intermolecular energy transfer that exploits the intermediating role of light confined in an optical cavity.

Light-colored butterflies and dragonflies thriving as European climate warms
Butterflies and dragonflies with lighter colors are out-competing darker-colored insects in the face of climate change. Scientists have shown that as the climate warms across Europe, communities of butterflies and dragonflies consist of more lighter coloured species. Darker coloured species are retreating northwards to cooler areas, but lighter coloured species are also moving their geographical range north as Europe gets warmer.
