Sharing One’s Faith Without Registration Off-Limits in Kazakhstan
Concerning trends continue in Kazakhstan for religious freedom. Recently, the Department for the Struggle Against Extremism has apprehended and fined several people merely for unregistered “missionary activity.” Anyone who has not received official governmental approval to share his or her faith – whether Jehovah’s Witness, Muslim, or Christian – could be arrested and fined for proselytizing. In the first three months of 2014 alone, at least 40 administrative punishments for exercise of religious freedom have been handed down in Kazakhstan.
In 2010, Russia passed the Law on the Transfer of Religious Property to Religious Organizations, designed to ensure that historical properties seized during the Soviet Era would be returned to their rightful owners. In Vyborg, a Lutheran church has had little success regaining their historical property, with court decisions being overturned then overturned yet again against the church. Some of these courts have maintained that the property does not qualify as religiously significant, despite its history as a building used for Sunday school. Since the most recent court decision, the Lutherans currently have two months to file yet another appeal.
Nigerian Police Commissioner Bans #BringBackOurGirls Protests, Calling Them “Lawless”
ICC Note: Police Commissioner Joseph Mbu has banned all protests demanding the safe return of the more than 240 schoolgirls for alleged security concerns. In a recent statement, Mbu said, "I cannot fold my hands and watch this lawlessness." Boko Haram mass-kidnapped more than 240 school girls from Chibok's Government Girls Secondary School on April 14, 2014. The girls have reportedly been ferried to camps in Niger and Chad, where some have been forcefully converted and sold into sexual and domestic slavery as child brides.

Everyone Knows Maya Angelou, Who Fundraised for Planned Parenthood, Do You Know This Pro-Life Heroine?
Numerous pro-life groups commented on Maya Angelou‘s passing last week. Most emphasized her courage in rejecting abortion when she became pregnant at the age of 16. But the Radiance Foundation pointed out that Angelou did not speak out for other children to have the same chance at life. In fact, she fundraised for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion organization. So let’s remember Angelou for her many accomplishments. But if you’re looking for someone who made a contribution to the civil rights movement and the pro-life movement, you don’t need to twist the facts to invent one in Angelou. The woman you’re looking for is Dr. Mildred Jefferson.

Then and Now: Bennett Block
Bascomb H. Bennett, born 1859, ran the Arlington hotel at Howard and Main. He would become the son-in-law and partner of pioneer businessman A.M. Cannon and his Bank of Spokane Falls. In 1882, Bennett was involved in one of the most infamous confrontations in Spokane newspaper history. John G. F. Hieber bought the Bennett in 1922 for $170,000. He had operated the Union Brewery and Hieber Brewing and Malting Co. after moving to Spokane in 1888. Prohibition shut him down in 1920, but he invented and patented a machine for processing fruit into juice and spent $100,000 to set up a plant to make soft drinks. He also turned to real estate investments like the Bennett. The building is attached to the Star Hotel and Rima buildings and had 80 apartments until it was made over in the late 1970s as a commercial mall connected to the skywalk system. The Hieber family still owns the block and attached buildings, home to businesses as Cyrus O’Leary’s, Brooks Clothiers, Jay Jacobs, Hahn Western Wear and Little Brick Café. Hieber’s granddaughter, Dru Hieber, is overseeing a new remodel, which includes the Bennett’s unused third-floor.
