Oral Family History Fades in Just Three Generations
Food for thought to get us working on recording our family stories
[via FamilySearch]  Ever frighten yourself when you couldn’t recall a family story or experiences you know had to have been recounted to you many times by your grandparents? Ever wonder why you know very little about the personal lives of your grandparents or great-grandparents?  Aaron Holt of the National Archives and Records Administration says that “it only takes three generations to lose a piece of oral family history.” If you want to avoid losing those precious family stories passed down through the generations, Holt continued, the story “must be purposely and accurately repeated over and over again through the generations to be preserved.”

More Cross Demolitions and Tightening Control Over House Churches in China
(Government Bans More House Church Gatherings and Controls Church Leaders in Zhejiang Province) ICC Note: We translated the Chinese article to English and it discusses Chinese government’s tightening control over the house churches in Zhejiang province. Church leaders and believers are threatened of facing unemployment or business shut-down if they do not stop gathering. We also see the control expanding to other provinces close to Zhejiang, such as Aihui province, according to ChinaAid. In the meantime, more crosses have been removed and most of them were not against any construction rules.

Christian Persecution Aid Volunteer Murdered by Boko Haram
ICC Note: In a city plagued by Boko Haram militants and their relentless attacks in pursuit of establishing a separate Islamic state in Northeast Nigeria to e ruled by Sharia law, a Christian volunteering with Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) was murdered. In a published statement, a VOM staffer said, “His death shocked almost all the Christian community.” According to those on the ground, more than 500 copies of the Christian organization’s newsletter on Nigeria were stolen from the victims car. In response, "Pastors in the area are now praying that the newsletters will minister to the militants," said VOM.

Malaysia: Tension Between Muslims and Christians
ICC Note: Media reported a series of  controversial events taking place recently in Malaysia showing an escalating tension and mistrust between Muslims and Christians: the largest Malaysian public university hosted a seminar that claimed all Christians should convert to Islam; a church got attacked due to the dispute over the use of the Arabic word "Allah" by non-Muslims. The increasing tension can be seen also from the columnist's suggestion to Malaysian Muslims reported in this article: Muslims to "infiltrate churches" to hear what Christian is said of Muslim.

At Least Five Killed in Suicide Attack in Predominantly Christian District
ICC Note: At least five innocents were killed Sunday when a suicide attacker killed himself and at least four others, including a twelve year old girl in the predominantly Christian district of Sabon Gari (foreign quarter), in Kano, Northeast Nigeria. Though no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of this posting, those on the ground suspect Boko Haram, which carried out notorious bombing campaigns in that same district in March and July of last year.

Why Should Fair Trials for MB Suspects be Important to Egyptian Christians?
ICC Note: Recent trials for members of the recently banned political group, the Muslim Brotherhood, kick off with an obviously tense politicized undertone. Their brief rule in the Egyptian government proved deadly to religious minorities, most particularly Christians. The obvious question comes: how should Egyptian Christians respond to these trials? In an attempt to uphold adopted Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Egyptians are seeking and should continue to seek fair trials. A legal system that ignores its laws will not be able to protect the rights of anyone. So Christians should call for trials to be carried out on the basis of evidence and for those responsible for the violence to receive punishment in accordance with the law.

Persecuted Christians flee Iran, find hope and homes in Germany
ICC Note: Christians in Iran face escalating persecution for converting from Islam. Women like Afsaneh who have converted have received lashings and even jail time for their faith. Seeking refuge in Germany, nearly 4,500 have left Iran and migrated to Europe. As crackdowns in Iran worsen, churches in Berlin and throughout Germany can come to expect a growing population of Christians seeking refuge.

Leader of Boko Haram Declares “Jihad War Against Christians and Christianity”
ICC Note: Leader and spokesman of Boko Haram, a radical Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) fighting for the establishment of a separate Islamic state in Northeast Nigeria to be ruled by Sharia law, said in a video released to Sahara Reporters, Abubakar Shekau said, “it is either you are with us Mujahedeen or you are with the Christians.” In what has proven to many a revelation, Shekau pledged war against Christians in Nigeria, even going so far as to equate Nigerian politicians’ affiliation with Western officials or ideals as apostasy, or the act of leaving Islam, which, under Sharia law, is punishable by death.

Christians in Pakistan’s FATA Demand Equal Rights
ICC Note: Christian from Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) has demanded the Supreme Court and the Peshawar High Court take the necessary steps in ensure that the basic constitutional and human rights afforded them are protected and enforced. According the Christians in the FATA, they are being denied these rights by local government officials. Will Pakistan's government stand up and take notice or will it turn a blind eye to the suffering of Christians in one of the world's most dangerous places?

ICC Calls Attention to Sudan’s Sentencing to Death of a Pregnant Mother
ICC Note: Faith-based and human rights organizations are drawing mass attention to the case of Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, a Christian mother pregnant with her second child who has been sentenced to 100 lashes and death for adultery and apostasy in Sudan. Calling on the U.S. and other members of the international community to apply pressure to the government of Sudan, ICC's William Stark said, "we [do] not want Sudan to feel like they could go through with this case without the world knowing, without the world watching." In its awareness efforts, ICC has started a social campaign, pushing people to tweet and post #ForMeriam.

Will India’s New Government Represent All Indians, Including Christians?
ICC Note: Now that Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) set to form India's next national government, many are left wondering whether the government they form will be for all Indians, including Christians and other minorities. Modi and BJP have a past of sectarian violence. Coming from the Hindu nationalist ideology, many wonder how the next government will treat Christians and other religious minorities. Please pray that Modi and BJP will overcome their Hindu nationalist past and rule India to the benefit of all Indian citizens.

I like your genes: People more likely to choose a spouse with similar DNA
Individuals are more genetically similar to their spouses than they are to randomly selected individuals from the same population, according to a new study. Scientists already knew that people tend to marry others who have similar characteristics, including religion, age, race, income, body type and education, among others. Scientists now show that people also are more likely to pick mates who have similar DNA.

Keywords hold our vocabulary together in memory
Like key players in social networks, scientists have found evidence that there are keywords in word networks that hold together groups of words in our memory. The existence of keywords opens up many possible real-life applications such as helping individuals with word finding after stroke. Conversely, removing a keyword through psycholinguistic tasks, could actually disrupt language processing - fracturing our word network.

Earth organisms survive under Martian conditions: Methanogens stay alive in extreme heat and cold
New research suggests that methanogens -- among the simplest and oldest organisms on Earth -- could survive on Mars. Methanogens, microorganisms in the domain Archaea, use hydrogen as their energy source and carbon dioxide as their carbon source, to metabolize and produce methane, also known as natural gas. Methanogens live in swamps and marshes, but can also be found in the gut of cattle, termites and other herbivores as well as in dead and decaying matter.

Then and Now: Motor Bus Depot
In the 1920s, the gasoline-powered bus was showing itself to be a more flexible mode of public transit than the streetcar or train. Three old buildings along Front St., between Howard and Wall St., were turned into a bus depot in 1924 by the Auto Interurban Co. and the Spokane-Lewiston Stage Line. The depot was the brainchild of Herbert S. Hawley, operator of the Auto Interurban Company. He started in 1911 with two passenger cars carrying passengers from the train depot in Priest River up to Priest Lake. He came to Spokane in 1913. When Hawley died at age 78 in 1953, Auto Interurban was running 50 local and regional buses. More companies were added until a new depot was needed. The Union Bus Depot opened in 1949 at 1125 W. Sprague. The old depot continued for a few years, then closed for good. Great Northwest Federal Savings and Loan tore the buildings down in 1977 to make way for a new bank.
