How Could the U.S. Stop Christian Persecution In China?
ICC Note: ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu testified today at a congressional hearing that the persecution in China has intensified since the beginning of 2014. Bob Fu pointed out that “Protection of freedom of religion and other God-endowed human rights is the foundation of our nation and once was a sacred principle adhered to by the U.S. government in diplomacy.” He provided four suggestions for the U.S. government and international community to take action to stop the Chinese government’s massive religious persecution.

Laos: 11 Christians Still Detained as EU-Laos Human Rights Talks Begin
ICC Note: 23 Christians in Savannakhet Province of Laos were arrested on May 11 for meeting in an unauthorized location, a church which was banned from holding church services two years ago.12 of them, including women and teenagers, have been released after signing documents promising not to meet at that location again. However, 11 other Christians are still detained as the EU's regular dialogue with the country on human rights and good governance starts in Brussels this week.

UN Security Council Committee Adds Boko Haram to List of Known al-Qaeda Affiliates
ICC Note: The United Nations (UN) Security Council’s Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) concerning Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities has reportedly failed to object to the addition of Boko Haram to a list of known entities officially recognized as affiliated with al-Qaeda. In being added to the list, additional leverage has been granted to impose assets freezes, weapons embargoes and travel bans in efforts to curb Boko Haram’s ability to perpetrate acts of terror. A major victory for Nigeria, a temporary member of the Council serving a two-year term, the recognition of affiliation could lead to even greater international support being lent to the Nigerian Army to assist it in its pursuit to incapacitate the Islamic insurgency.

Christian Convert Beaten Unconscious in Kenyan Mosque
ICC Note: A recent convert from Islam to Christianity was beaten unconscious in a Mosque after admitting to his faith in “Isa,” Jesus. Following the beating, he was taken into police custody. His whereabouts are now unknown. Pastors local to the small town on the outskirts of Nairobi who facilitated Mohammed’s conversion are fearful for his welling. They intend to meet with law enforcement in the coming days to determine where Mohammed is, what has been done to him and whether or not his attackers will be brought to justice.

A Boko Haram Survivor’s Testimony Moves Law Makers on Capitol Hill
ICC Note: Testimony recorded in a private session between law makers and Boko Haram survivor, Deborah Peter, was entered into the official record of a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing that discussed “Boko Haram, Nigeria and Beyond.” Peter, 15, survived an attack in December 2011, during which three Boko Haram militants executed her father, a pastor, and brother in their Chibok home. A prelude of sorts to the mass-abduction of more than 240 girls from a government-sponsored secondary school in Chibok, Peter’s story speaks to the worst of Boko Haram, and it’s pattern of systematic targeting of Christians, especially in the country’s increasingly radicalized northeast.

Everything You Need to Know About Why Christians in India Fear Modi’s Rise to Power
ICC Note: With India's national elections finished, Hindu nationalist party BJP and their Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi set to form the next national government. Many Christians and other religious minorities have voiced their concerns regarding the victory for the Hindu nationalists. Many believe that the future of religious freedom and the existence of religious minorities is now under threat in India. Why? Who are BJP and Modi and why do religious minorities fear their rise to power?

Report Finds Thousands Of Toddlers Are Being Medicated For ADHD At Alarming Rates

Promising discovery in fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria
A small molecule that prevents bacteria from forming into biofilms, a frequent cause of infections, has been discovered by researchers. The anti-biofilm peptide works on a range of bacteria including many that cannot be treated by antibiotics. "Currently there is a severe problem with antibiotic-resistant organisms," says the lead author of the study. "Our entire arsenal of antibiotics is gradually losing effectiveness."

New 'T-ray' tech converts light to sound for weapons detection, medical imaging
A device that essentially listens for light waves could help open up the last frontier of the electromagnetic spectrum -- the terahertz range. So-called T-rays, which are light waves too long for human eyes to see, could help airport security guards find chemical and other weapons. They might let doctors image body tissues with less damage to healthy areas. And they could give astronomers new tools to study planets in other solar systems. Those are just a few possible applications.

A glimpse into nature's looking glass -- to find the genetic code is reassigned: Stop codon varies widely
It has long been assumed that there is only one 'canonical' genetic code, so each word means the same thing to every organism. Now, this paradigm has been challenged by the discovery of large numbers of exceptions from the canonical genetic code.

NASA's WISE findings poke hole in black hole 'doughnut' theory
A survey of more than 170,000 supermassive black holes, using NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), has astronomers reexamining a decades-old theory about the varying appearances of these interstellar objects. The unified theory of active, supermassive black holes, first developed in the late 1970s, was created to explain why black holes, though similar in nature, can look completely different. Some appear to be shrouded in dust, while others are exposed and easy to see.

Ancient DNA ends Australia's claim to kiwi origins
Australia can no longer lay claim to the origins of the iconic New Zealand kiwi following new research showing the kiwi’s closest relative is not the emu as was previously thought. Instead, the diminutive kiwi is most closely related to the extinct Madagascan elephant bird -- a 2-3 meter tall, 275 kg giant. And surprisingly, the study concluded, both of these flightless birds once flew.

Fruit flies show mark of intelligence in thinking before they act, study suggests
Fruit flies 'think' before they act, a study suggests. Neuroscientists showed that fruit flies take longer to make more difficult decisions. In experiments asking fruit flies to distinguish between ever closer concentrations of an odor, the researchers found that the flies don't act instinctively or impulsively. Instead they appear to accumulate information before committing to a choice.

Blocking pain receptors extends lifespan, boosts metabolism in mice
Chronic pain is known to shorten lifespan, and pain tends to increase with age. But is there a relationship between pain and longevity? Researchers have found that mice lacking the capsaicin pain receptor live around 14 percent longer than other mice, and they retain a more youthful metabolism as well. Receptor blockers could not only relieve pain, but increase lifespan, improve metabolic health and help diabetics and the obese.

Top ten new species for 2014
An international committee selected the top 10 from among the approximately 18,000 new species named during the previous year. The list includes a quartet of tiny newcomers to science: a miniscule skeleton shrimp from Santa Catalina Island in California, a single-celled protist that does a credible imitation of a sponge, a clean room microbe that could be a hazard during space travel and a teensy fringed fairyfly named Tinkerbell.

First broadband wireless connection ... to the moon: Record-shattering Earth-to-Moon uplink
Scientists have prepared new details and the first comprehensive overview of the on-orbit performance of their record-shattering laser-based communication uplink between the moon and Earth, which beat the previous record transmission speed last fall by a factor of 4,800.

NASA OKs Citizen Science Attempt to Rescue a Vintage Spacecraft
A hardy little spacecraft is about to come home after an incredibly long journey and an unexpected mission it had not been built for. As it flies by Earth next month, scientists will have a brief window to attempt to communicate with the vintage NASA craft and put it back to work on its original mission. Because of a tight budget, NASA couldn’t muster the resources to make this revival happen. So, a group of citizen scientists stepped forward to take on the challenge. Yesterday, NASA officially endorsed the group, known as the the ISEE-3 Reboot Project, and signed a space act agreement giving it the go ahead to try to bring back to life a mission that started during the Carter Administration.
