Forgotten sacrifices: Grand Coulee Dam memorial found in Colville
A monument honoring those who died while building the Grand Coulee Dam stood along the main thoroughfare in Grand Coulee between 1938 and 1940. It was 10 feet of Georgia granite, with room for 75 names, and commissioned by the local American Legion. A beautiful tribute, by all accounts. But the monument stood there for only two years. In June 1940, the people of Grand Coulee found the granite pillar, all seven tons of it, gone, the concrete pedestal all that was left to indicate it was ever there to begin with. So where’s the monument honoring the sacrifice of those who died? As it turns out, Colville.

Airplane crash kills pilot near Steamboat Rock
Kenneth A. Berger, 60, of Monroe, Wash. had already put down his Searay amphibious plane at about 5 p.m., witnesses said. They said he apparently was trying to take off again, when the plane flipped over forward into the water, witnesses said.
