The Margaret Seaton Scrapbooks: book 1, part 1

This post contains the first 15 images from the first of three scrapbooks which my mother put together beginning in 1933. Most items concern the building of the big Dam, but there are also many that are about other things of interest. Some articles are incomplete or not in chronological order. Time has not always been kind to the pages. There are also lessons on what not do do in making a scrapbook: don't use glue, don't use tape, do use acid-free paper, do record sources and other information about each item, to name a few of those lessons. So if anyone has a better copy of something in this post, or more information about each item, such as source, I will be most grateful if you would message it to me at rfsamt@gmail.com.

Regulations Threaten to Limit Best Schooling Options for Children
What is the measure of a good school? And who is best positioned to decide what works? For decades, policymakers, and education officials have attempted to bolster school “accountability” by increasing regulations on schools across the board—public, charter, and private. They have tried to do so at the federal level for half a century, with federal intervention in K-12 education hitting a high-water mark under the Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind policy and the Obama administration’s attempts to pressure states into adopting Common Core. Yet ever-increasing government intervention in schooling has had little positive impact on education outcomes writ large. Math and reading achievement outcomes have been largely stagnant since the 1970s for high school seniors, while graduation rates have seen only modest improvements (and even those figures may be artificially inflated).

Reagan’s Shining City on a Hill Didn’t Have ‘Open Borders’
On the anniversary of that important day more than two centuries ago, a rather emotional commercial ran on television on July 4 of this year. Sponsored by the liberal group Becoming American Initiative, the ad showed Ronald Reagan in front of the Statue of Liberty speaking to a crowd and formally launching his 1980 bid for the presidency. For only 30 seconds, it’s a pretty good TV spot — effective, emotional, and it plays right into both conservative and liberal hands. It must be noted, however, that many liberals hated Reagan’s guts when he was alive. For the record, liberals often falsely and inaccurately quote Reagan’s farewell address, in which he explained what he meant about the “shining city.” Yes, America was a nation of immigrants — but liberals fail to note his city had “walls” and “a door.” Reagan’s shining city did not have open borders. And many of Reagan’s policies were designed to strengthen the economic and political conditions in other countries, so native citizens would not feel the need to flee their countries.

EU Resolution Demands Critics of LGBT and Islam Be Prosecuted
As awareness of the dangerous globalist agenda to subvert freedom and self-government grows across the Western world, totalitarians within the European Union are in such a panic that they are now openly demanding censorship of the Internet, the press, and free speech. They are also dictating to national governments that organizations they disagree with must be totally banned. And they called for governments and companies to actively propagandize the public. Critics of homosexuality, gender confusion, Islam, open borders, and more are all in the EU's crosshairs. And ironically, the EU bigwigs are making all these totalitarian and intolerant demands in the name of “democracy” and “tolerance.” Welcome to the Orwellian world of globalist EU double speak.

Judge Blocks Disputed Keystone XL Pipeline in Setback for Trump
As the Trump administration has moved aggressively to roll back environmental protections and speed up oil and coal projects, it has repeatedly been blocked by courts finding that the administration did not follow longstanding rules in making its sweeping changes. Now, a federal judge has issued a repudiation of one of President Trump’s first acts as president, his decision to allow the disputed Keystone XL oil pipeline to proceed, saying that the administration failed to present a “reasoned explanation” for the move and “simply discarded” the effect the project would have on climate change.

San Francisco Just Passed the Largest Tax Increase in City History. It's Anybody's Guess if It's Legal.
On Tuesday, some 60 percent of Bay City residents voted in favor of Proposition C, a ballot initiative that would raise an estimated $300 million a year for housing, mental health treatment, and other services for the city's 7,500 homeless residents through a hike in the city's business gross receipts tax. That's a huge amount of new revenue, increasing the take from the city's current business taxes by some 33 percent, and nearly doubling the $380 million the city currently spends on the homeless. Because it's a gross receipts tax, it would tax companies' total revenue, regardless of how profitable they are.

Post-Brexit Britain Must Turn Its Back on Protectionism
The First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, recently denounced the idea of a post-Brexit Britain entering into trade deals with poorer nations. Jones’s main objection lay in the premise that free trade with less developed countries would “undermine Wales’ farming sector.” Jones’s remarks came after meeting International Trade Secretary Liam Fox. Sensibly, Dr. Fox has not been dettered by this warning and remains focused on seeking new post-Brexit trade deals. Comparative advantage is a force that drives worldwide progress, prevents stagnation and allows the poorest nations to develop.

Progressives need to build on the victories, not fret about the losses
‪You can’t always get what you want. So said the philosopher Mick Jagger. He said it in 1969, so obviously, he didn’t intend it as a comment on the 2018 midterms. But progressives might be forgiven for thinking otherwise. After all, they wanted Andrew Gillum to become Florida’s first African-American governor. They didn’t get it. They wanted Stacey Abrams of Georgia to become the nation’s first female African-American governor. They didn’t get it, pending a possible runoff. They wanted the inspiring Beto O’Rourke to unseat the depressing Ted Cruz as senator from Texas. They didn’t get it. Most of all, progressives wanted a clear rebuke of the moral abomination that is Donald Trump. They didn’t get that, either. Instead, the midterms went a long way toward proving that Trump’s rise to power and the intolerance that fueled it were no aberration. For the first time in his misbegotten presidency — likely the first time in his misbegotten life — Trump now faces accountability. No more lying and lawbreaking while a bunch of invertebrates calling themselves a Congress look the other way.

Jim Acosta violated one of the oldest rules of journalism
There was a time not long ago when young journalists were taught not to become the story. Apparently, many news organizations have flipped that lesson on its head. But we are witnessing something more insidious here than media trash talk. Plain and simple, we are watching expressions of personal hatred. The conduct of a handful of so-called reporters during President Trump’s news conference was disgraceful beyond measure. This is not journalism, this is narcissism. Naturally, the boorish Jim Acosta of CNN was the instigator. As is his habit, Acosta doesn’t ask questions — he makes accusations and argues. Almost daily, he does it with the press secretary; Wednesday, he did it with the president.

As many are aware of the press covering of the current drama of the large caravans of Hondurans and other Central Americans parading north to the U.S. border, many of us here in Honduras (on the other end of the equation) are deeply troubled as this wrong mindset affects many who are in our area. I personally feel very uncomfortable about the chaos many of the uneducated immigrants will thrust upon the United States. And the way in which they have forsaken international laws and police barricades cannot be justified. Some are indeed refugees seeking legitimate asylum. But others are simply fleeing generally difficult (but not dire) conditions, or have simply chosen what seems to be the easier route of escape.

Are We Really Poorer Than Our Parents?
In recent years, many US politicians and journalists have warned that the millennials are at the risk of ending up “poorer than their parents.” The evidence certainly suggests that the Great Recession has led to wage stagnation and high unemployment among young Americans, who have soured on the idea of achieving the American Dream. The just-released Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s Annual Report on Generational Attitudes toward Socialism in America, for example, has found that 52 per cent of millennials would prefer to live in a socialist (46 per cent) or a communist (6 per cent) country. Conversely, only 40 per cent want to live in a capitalist one. Mercifully, Americans tend to associate socialism with the high-tax and high-redistribution welfare states of Scandinavia rather than the Marxist dictatorships of the days of yore. Before they reject American-style capitalism, however, millennials should consider how prosperous ordinary Americans really are.

Why do women earn less than men? Evidence from train and bus operators
Even in a unionized environment, where work tasks are similar, hourly wages are identical, and tenure dictates promotions, female workers earn $0.89 on the male-worker dollar (weekly earnings). We use confidential administrative data on bus and train operators from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to show that the weekly earnings gap can be explained entirely by the workplace choices that women and men make. Women value time and flexibility more than men. Women take more unpaid time off using the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and work fewer overtime hours than men. Men and women plan to work similar overtime hours when they are scheduled three months in advance, but men actually work nearly 50% more overtime hours than women. Women with dependents value time away from work more than do men with dependents. When selecting work schedules, women try to avoid weekend, holiday, and split shifts more than men. To avoid unfavorable work times, women prioritize their schedules over route safety and select routes with a higher probability of accidents. Women are less likely than men to game the scheduling system by trading off work hours at regular wages for overtime hours at premium wages. Conditional on seniority, which dictates choice sets, the weekly earnings gap can be explained entirely by differences in operator choices of hours, schedules, and routes.

IDAHO SILVER MINES' FIERCE MERGER WAR
''It's sad,'' said Ben Harrison, a broker on the Spokane, Wash., Stock Exchange, with a shake of his head. ''People who used to be friends go to lunch at Jameson's, and now they just glare at each other.'' The tense atmosphere in this mining district, known as the Coeur d'Alene, is a result of two fierce merger fights that have embroiled seven companies, including the Sunshine Mining Company and the Hecla Mining Company, two of the nation's largest silver producers. At stake in the various merger proposals is control by these two concerns of approximately 20 percent of the nation's silver production. The ''silver war'' as analysts call it, was touched off by the desire of Sunshine and Hecla to tighten their grip on a valley that produces about 15 million ounces of silver a year. That is nearly half of all newly mined silver in the United States.

Egypt attack: Gunmen kill seven Coptic Christians in bus ambush
Islamic militants have ambushed three buses carrying Christian pilgrims on their way to a remote desert monastery south of the Egyptian capital of Cairo, killing seven people and wounding 19, Egyptian officials said. All but one of those killed were members of the same family, according to a list of the victims’ names released by the Coptic Orthodox church, which said among the dead were a boy and a girl, age 15 and 12 respectively. The local Islamic State affiliate, which spearheads militants fighting security forces in the Sinai Peninsula, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, according to SITE, a US-based group that monitors and translates militants’ statements. It said the attack was revenge for the imprisonment by Egyptian authorities of “our chaste sisters”. It did not elaborate.
