Brunei: Christians Facing Increasing Persecution Under Sharia Law
ICC Note: The small sultanate of Brunei adopted Sharia law on May 1, 2014 and the courts will start to enforce the harsh Islamic punishments over the next two years. The possible persecution from the laws has been emerging: non-Muslim can no longer share their faith with Muslims and atheists; Christian women are already required to wear head covering; Christian materials are not allowed to be brought to the country; Christians are forbidden to use the Arabic word "Allah". Despite concerns raised within the United Nations, Western countries are reluctant to intervene, including Brunei's two major trading partners Netherlands and Britain.

1,000 Christians in Eritrea Arbitrarily Detained for Gathering to Pray, Worship
ICC Note: Christians in Eritrea, most of whom belong to "unregistered" churches due to a government ban on registration for religious institutions, continue to face immense persecution at the hands of President Isaias Afwerki's highly repressive regime. Members of underground churches within the "Great Prison," one of Eritrea's several less-than-desirable nicknames, continue to report over 1,000 Christians remain in detention for the expression of their faith. Those arbitrary detained can face anywhere from a few months imprisonment to more than 10 years, often held incognito from friends and family, tortured, and prodded to recant their faith.

Representatives Wolf, Franks Call on Secretary Kerry to Grant Asylum to Mother on Death Row
ICC Note: Congressman Frank Wolf (R) (VA-10) issued a press release Tuesday calling on the United States (U.S.) to take decisive action in assisting Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, wife of American citizen and New Hampshire resident Daniel Wani, who has been sentence to 100 lashes and death by hanging on charges of adultery and apostasy by a Public Order Court in Khartoum Sudan.

Coordinated Bomb Blasts Tear Through Jos Central Market, Killing 118, Injuring 45
ICC Note: Coordinated bombs exploded this morning in the allegedly predominantly Christian part of Jos, Nigeria's central market. Planted on the market's railway transit system, the two devices detonated at 3pm and 3:30pm respectively, killing at least 118 and wounding more than 40. The second bombing in three days, Tuesday's explosions followed the detonation of a suicide car bomb in Kano's Foreign Quarter, also reportedly predominantly Christian. Allegedly killing 20 Christians, Kano law enforcement at the scene confirmed only five deaths, including those of a 12-year-old girl and that of the bomber himself. According to local sources, the bomb was detonated prematurely, its intended targets having been three churches located on Middle Road. Both the Kano and Jos bombings are suspected as the work of Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Boko Haram.

Egypt’s Christian Garbage Collectors Back El Sisi In Hopes Of Greater Stability
ICC Note: Amidst the campaigns for Egypt’s Presidential election, Coptic Christians struggle to find and maintain jobs. Antonia Bakhit, a Copt in the Manshiyat Naser neighborhood, sifts through and recycles garbage filtered from Cairo with his family to make a living. In hopes of more stability and a better economic situation for Copts and other Egyptians, Antonio and his family are pushing for the election of former defense minister El Sisi.

Christian Exodus Shadows Papal Visit To Holy Land
ICC Note: As the date approaches for Pope Francis’ visit to the Middle East, the Christian population continues to dwindle in the Middle East. The Christian population has fallen to just 2% in Israel due to the downtrodden economy, violence, and persecution. As the Pope’s visit draws near and attention is drawn to Christians in the region, many Vatican officials in the region are worried the Christian population will disappear entirely from the Middle East.

Saeed Abedini, American Pastor Imprisoned In Iran, Beaten In Hospital, Family Charges
ICC Note: Pastor Abedini, an Iranian-American has been imprisoned in Iran and sentenced to eight years for his faith. He had been sent to a hospital to receive much needed treatment. On Tuesday, guards beat Saeed and forcibly transferred him back to the prison. It is unclear the reason for this change in treatment. One of the guards made comments of relation to negotiations surrounding Iran's nuclear program.

More than 64 Churches Completely or Partially Removed in Zhejiang, China
ICC Note: The “anti-church” campaign has been continued for almost one month since the demolition of Sanjiang Christian Church in Wenzhou city, the “Jerusalem of the East”. This article compiled the list of 64 churches that have been demolished either partially or completely. However, signs show that the government’s real purpose of this campaign is to outlaw house churches and 85 house churches are facing crackdown by the end of May.

Religious Violence and Development Myths Surrounding India’s New Leader
ICC Note: Following India's national elections, Narendra Modi and his BJP look set to form India's next government. Running on a platform of economic development, Modi was able to shed his controversial past, marked with violent incidents of Hindu nationalism, and received the majority of the votes in the election. Now it remains to be seen how Modi and his BJP will rule India. Will they respect the freedom of religion and the rights of religious minorities like Christians or will they revert back to their Hindu nationalist ideologies and increase restrictions on religious minorities?

Bishops Hopeful for India’s Future under Modi
ICC Note: Following the victory of Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India's national elections, Catholic bishops have voiced hope for the future of Christianity in India. Many Christians fear the rise of Modi and his BJP because of their history of sectarian violence. IT remains to be seen whether or not Modi and BJP have shed this past and will create an inclusive India for all, including Christians.

Christian News Org Calls on Secretary Kerry to Grant Asylum to Mother on Death Row
ICC Note: CNS News publicly questioned State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki regarding the United States (U.S.) citizenship of Daniel Wani, husband to a Christian mother pregnant with her second child sentenced to death May 15 for her faith, and his children. Two Congressmen, Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) sent a letter Friday to the U.S. Department of State calling on it to grant political asylum to Wani’s wife, Meriam Yahia Ibrahim.

Nigeria Calls on the United Nations to Recognize Boko Haram’s Ties to al Qaeda
ICC Note: The Government of Nigeria, headed by President Goodluck Jonathan, has formally called on the United Nations to designate Boko Haram an affiliate of al Qaeda, which would allow for grater international sanctions to be placed on individuals and entities Nigeria believes to be funding Boko Haram’s operations. With an increasingly expanded capability to commit egregious acts of violence, a modernizing weapons arsenal, and a noticeable shift toward more advanced tactics of guerrilla warfare, experts have, for years, alleged international ties between known financiers of global terrorism and Boko Haram.

The Life Cycle Of Ideas
Every scientific idea has its day. Theories are born and experiments are designed; results are put to the test, then disproved or accepted as canon. As scientists discuss an idea, they cite the paper that proposed it in their own work. Then, as the conversation moves on, references to the paper drop off. The rise and fall of citations serves to measure the lifespan of a paper’s underlying ideas.

UN applauds Uruguay's plan to take Syrian refugees
The United Nations' refugee commission expressed gratitude Wednesday that Uruguay is preparing to provide a new home for 100 children orphaned by Syria's civil war. Senior regional UNHCR official Michelle Alfaro said there are more than 2 million Syrian refugees in all, and Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan can't handle them all, so the agency hopes to relocate 30,000 this year. Germany took 5,000 Syrian refugees last year and has agreed to take another 5,000 this year. Brazil has granted humanitarian visas to 2,000. President Jose Mujica's offer to take 100 children "is a drop in the ocean, but each effort by each country is very important and welcome," Alfaro said. Mujica said the orphans could be housed at first at the presidency's summer retreat, a mansion and riverfront estate surrounded by rolling pastures.
