Fellow soldiers call Bowe Bergdahl a deserter, not a hero
The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is not shared by many of those who served with him: veterans and soldiers who call him a deserter whose "selfish act" ended up costing the lives of better men.

Suspect in Sand Dunes assault found, no charges
The victim, Corey Barker, 37, suffered a broken neck and bleeding in his skull after he was allegedly pushed from a boat head first into shallow water May 24 at the sand dunes. Even with an unclear description of the suspect, residents' tips helped the sheriff's office identify the suspect. He was interviewed by investigators and Barker reportedly declined to press charges against the man. The case is now closed. Because the suspect will not face criminal charges, the sheriff's office did not release his name.

Nigerian President Asks the Archbishop of Canterbury for Prayer in Fight Against Boko Haram
ICC Note: Archbishop Rt. Rev Justin Delby of Canterbury visited the Presidential Palace in Abuja to pray with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan this week. The president specifically requested the clergy man's prayers regarding the continuously deteriorating security situation in the nation's northeast, as exemplified by Boko Haram's most recent spate of attacks.

Boko Haram’s Blood-lettings: 10 Days of Escalating Terror
More than 45 Churches Destroyed, 258 Civilians Killed as Nigeria's Northeast Descends into Chaos
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Boko Haram militants murdered at least 83 civilians in three separate villages across northeast Nigeria's predominantly Christian Gwoza area in Borno State. Faulty telecommunications equipment delayed reports of the incident from reaching Borno State's capital of Maidguri until Wednesday, June 4.

Egyptian Blasphemy Case Postponed till June 24
ICC Note: An Egyptian Christian has been accused of contempt of religion for liking a facebook page. The next hearing on his case has been postponed until June 24. Blasphemy cases are often abused against religious minorities. In Egypt’s tense political atmosphere, just liking a facebook page sparked calls for violence and even led to a shop being attacked.

Has Anything Really Changed: 25th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square Massacre
China Continues to Restrict Religious Freedom as Church Demolitions Continue
On June 4th, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sent 20,000 soldiers and tanks to crush student-led pro-democracy protest in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The government perceived the demonstrations as a threat to their authority.  Tragically, 25 years later, the Chinese government is still trying to crush the rights, especially the religious rights, of its citizens. In fact, in just the past two months, a massive church and cross demolition campaign has been carried out in Zhejiang Province.  Over 60 churches have been damaged under the guise of following codes to, “rectify and remove illegal construction for the purpose of urban development.”

USCIRF Issues Statement on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul
ICC Note: USCIRF releases a report finding “misguided” a bill proposed in Turkey to change a historic Christian building, and now a museum back into a mosque. This building, built during the Byzantine Empire, stood as a Christian symbol for 1000 years, before becoming a mosque, and presently a museum in the Turkish republic. If this building is converted to a mosque, the symbolism could cause a divisive split, further demonstrating the government of Turkey’s commitments to one particular religious group and its suppression of its Christian minorities.

Egyptian Election Gives Hope to Christians, Bishop Says
ICC Note: With the Egyptian elections officially over, El Sisi has secured his place as the next president of Egypt. Egypt’s Roman Catholic bishop declares that it is a beneficial step for both Christians and Muslims alike. Sisi, who was head of the Egyptian army that overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood, is perceived to bring a welcoming environment back to religious minorities and protection in the Constitution and laws of Egypt.

Concerned Christians Hold Protest Outside Sudanese Embassy in Ottawa
06/04/2014 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) - International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that organizers directed by RiadhandBassma Jaballah, a Tunisian Christian and religious freedom activist, are holding two events the week of June 2, March For Meriam, and Sit-in On Parliament to demand Meriam Yahia Ibrahim be immediately and unconditionally released.

USA: Michigan VA Hospital Hides Jesus Behind a Curtain
ICC Note: In the midst of the controversy surrounding the Department of Veterans Affairs, Christian veterans are also facing the threat of religious discrimination. In a VA facility, the hospital chapel was required to relocate various religious icons – including a statue of Jesus, a statue of Mary, a cross and an altar – behind a curtain. The National Chaplain Center determined that these symbols did not meet government regulations for religious neutrality and were placed behind a hospital curtain.

Church Poster in UK Labeled “Hate Incident” by Police
ICC Note: In Norfolk, UK, British police were called to investigate a billboard put up by the Attenborough Baptist Church that read "If you think there is no God you'd better be right!" The police labeled the billboard an incident of hate speech and the church has taken it down. The incident is just one of several in the UK were freedom of religious speech, and specifically speech related to orthodox Christian beliefs, is being challenged. Over the past several years at least two street preachers have also been arrested in the UK for preaching on the topic of homosexuality.

Arizona Shutting Down Church for Unpaid Taxes Despite Tax Exemption
ICC Note: La Paz County of Arizona is illegally forcing Church of the Isaiah 58 Project of Arizona to pay $68,000 or else face foreclosure. Despite the fact that the Arizona Department of Revenue has stated that the church does not owe the tax, La Paz County continues to enforce the unreasonable payment. Unless they can raise the funds before their deadline, this church, which has been an integral part of the community in helping the homeless, will be forced to close its doors. While the motives behind this specific case are unclear, increasingly across the US reports are emerging of local and state governments using various ordinances to place undue restrictions on Christian places of worship.

Kazakh Baptist Refuses to Pay Fine for Unregistered Religious Meeting, Imprisoned for Ten Days
KAZAKHSTAN: Drink vodka – yes, watch football – yes, praying – no
While meeting within a private home for any social purpose is permissible, in Kazakhstan, meeting for religious reasons without state registration can end with receiving a fine. Viktor Kandyba – a member of Kazakhstan’s Council for Churches Baptists, who refuse on principle to seek state permission to worship – received such a fine and refused to pay it. He is currently in prison for a ten-day term, issued for his non-compliance with the court’s order.

Police in Afghanistan Searching for Kidnapped Jesuit Priest
ICC Note: On Monday, June 2, a Jesuit priest from India was kidnapped by six gunmen in Afghanistan. Since Monday, there has been little news regarding who kidnapped the priest and the motivation behind the kidnapping. Please keep this priest in your prayers today.

Christians in India Call on New Government for Equal Rights
ICC Note: Christian leaders in India have called on the new government to grant equal rights to low caste Christians. Over the last six decades, the Indian government has ignored this demand for equal rights. Currently, low caste Indians (called Dalits) receive scheduled class rights that insure they are included in educational institutions and government jobs. These scheduled class rights have only been extended to Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh Dalits and have been repeatedly denied for Christians and Muslim Dalits. Will this government finally listen?

Energy in the Executive
In 2009, Congress came close to enacting an economy-wide plan to ration carbon via a cap-and-trade system for the stated purpose of reducing climate change. It would have been a very bad deal for America, with costs that were at least ten times greater than expected economic benefits. Fortunately, good sense prevailed, and the Waxman-Markey proposal was defeated, though it was a close-run thing. The Obama administration hasn’t given up on the dream, and is now proposing a more narrowly targeted version of the same basic carbon-rationing concept.

You may recognize yogurt company Chobani by the ostentatious "100" rainbow-plastered on their cups. This is to inform the buying public that each cup has 100 calories. Chobani have been using the “How Matters” campaign to promote their high protein, low calorie Greek yogurts. All was going well until the slogan “Nature got us to 100 calories, not scientists." Despite Chobani’s claim, it took a lot of scientific expertise to put the nature into a pot. Let’s look at the ingredient list for their fat-free cherry yogurt.

The anti-vaccine movement hit upon a clever marketing phrase with their “Too Many, Too Soon” campaign. Astronomers discover first Thorne-Zytkow object, a bizarre type of hybrid star
In a discovery decades in the making, scientists have detected the first of a 'theoretical' class of stars first proposed in 1975 by physicist Kip Thorne and astronomer Anna Zytkow. Thorne-Zytkow objects are hybrids of red supergiant and neutron stars that superficially resemble normal red supergiants, such as Betelguese in the constellation Orion. They differ, however, in their distinct chemical signatures that result from unique activity in their stellar interiors.

Light from huge explosion 12 billion years ago reaches Earth
Intense light from the enormous explosion of a star 12.1 billion years ago -- shortly after the Big Bang -- recently reached Earth and was observed by a robotic telescope. Known as a gamma-ray burst, these rare, high-energy explosions are the catastrophic collapse of a star at the end of its life. Astronomers can analyze the observational data to draw further conclusions about the structure of the early universe.
