Suspect in Sand Dunes assault found, no charges
The victim, Corey Barker, 37, suffered a broken neck and bleeding in his skull after he was allegedly pushed from a boat head first into shallow water May 24 at the sand dunes. Even with an unclear description of the suspect, residents' tips helped the sheriff's office identify the suspect. He was interviewed by investigators and Barker reportedly declined to press charges against the man. The case is now closed. Because the suspect will not face criminal charges, the sheriff's office did not release his name.

China Continues to Restrict Religious Freedom as Church Demolitions Continue
On June 4th, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sent 20,000 soldiers and tanks to crush student-led pro-democracy protest in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The government perceived the demonstrations as a threat to their authority. Tragically, 25 years later, the Chinese government is still trying to crush the rights, especially the religious rights, of its citizens. In fact, in just the past two months, a massive church and cross demolition campaign has been carried out in Zhejiang Province. Over 60 churches have been damaged under the guise of following codes to, “rectify and remove illegal construction for the purpose of urban development.”
USCIRF Issues Statement on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul
ICC Note: USCIRF releases a report finding “misguided” a bill proposed in Turkey to change a historic Christian building, and now a museum back into a mosque. This building, built during the Byzantine Empire, stood as a Christian symbol for 1000 years, before becoming a mosque, and presently a museum in the Turkish republic. If this building is converted to a mosque, the symbolism could cause a divisive split, further demonstrating the government of Turkey’s commitments to one particular religious group and its suppression of its Christian minorities.

The National Chaplain Center determined that these symbols did not meet government regulations for religious neutrality and were placed behind a hospital curtain.

Arizona Shutting Down Church for Unpaid Taxes Despite Tax Exemption
ICC Note: La Paz County of Arizona is illegally forcing Church of the Isaiah 58 Project of Arizona to pay $68,000 or else face foreclosure. Despite the fact that the Arizona Department of Revenue has stated that the church does not owe the tax, La Paz County continues to enforce the unreasonable payment. Unless they can raise the funds before their deadline, this church, which has been an integral part of the community in helping the homeless, will be forced to close its doors. While the motives behind this specific case are unclear, increasingly across the US reports are emerging of local and state governments using various ordinances to place undue restrictions on Christian places of worship.

In 2009, Congress came close to enacting an economy-wide plan to ration carbon via a cap-and-trade system for the stated purpose of reducing climate change. It would have been a very bad deal for America, with costs that were at least ten times greater than expected economic benefits. Fortunately, good sense prevailed, and the Waxman-Markey proposal was defeated, though it was a close-run thing. The Obama administration hasn’t given up on the dream, and is now proposing a more narrowly targeted version of the same basic carbon-rationing concept.

Yogurt Maker Chobani Sick Of Scientists Ruining Everything
You may recognize yogurt company Chobani by the ostentatious "100" rainbow-plastered on their cups. This is to inform the buying public that each cup has 100 calories. By what dark blood oath did these innovators accomplish such a feat? Simply put, they removed all of the science, an adulterant known to dramatically inflate calorie count.
How Science Put The Nature Into A Chobani Pot
Chobani have been using the “How Matters” campaign to promote their high protein, low calorie Greek yogurts. All was going well until the slogan “Nature got us to 100 calories, not scientists." Despite Chobani’s claim, it took a lot of scientific expertise to put the nature into a pot. Let’s look at the ingredient list for their fat-free cherry yogurt.

Delaying Vaccines Not A Good IdeaThere’s nothing like cold hard data to counteract opinion and propaganda. The anti-vaccine movement hit upon a clever marketing phrase with their “Too Many, Too Soon” campaign. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to capture the complexity and nuance of scientific data with a witty slogan, so such slogans tend to work better for those who don’t really care about such things as scientific data.

Astronomers discover first Thorne-Zytkow object, a bizarre type of hybrid star
In a discovery decades in the making, scientists have detected the first of a 'theoretical' class of stars first proposed in 1975 by physicist Kip Thorne and astronomer Anna Zytkow. Thorne-Zytkow objects are hybrids of red supergiant and neutron stars that superficially resemble normal red supergiants, such as Betelguese in the constellation Orion. They differ, however, in their distinct chemical signatures that result from unique activity in their stellar interiors.
Surprisingly strong magnetic fields can match black holes' pull: Long-neglected magnetic fields have an unexpected presence
A new study of supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies has found magnetic fields play an impressive role in the systems' dynamics. In fact, in dozens of black holes surveyed, the magnetic field strength matched the force produced by the black holes' powerful gravitational pull.
Human stem cells successfully transplanted, grown in pigs
A new line of genetically modified pigs will host transplanted cells without the risk of rejection, opening the door for future stem cell therapy research. One of the biggest challenges for medical researchers studying the effectiveness of stem cell therapies is that transplants or grafts of cells are often rejected by the hosts.
Light from huge explosion 12 billion years ago reaches Earth
Intense light from the enormous explosion of a star 12.1 billion years ago -- shortly after the Big Bang -- recently reached Earth and was observed by a robotic telescope. Known as a gamma-ray burst, these rare, high-energy explosions are the catastrophic collapse of a star at the end of its life. Astronomers can analyze the observational data to draw further conclusions about the structure of the early universe.

Infiniti’s New Steering System Is a Big Step Forward—Unless You Love Cars
Automakers are slowly foisting autonomous car technology on us, and Infiniti is the latest to drive us ever closer to the cliff. The new Q50 is the market’s first “steer-by-wire” model, meaning there’s no mechanical connection between the wheel in your hands and the wheels on the street. Just electric signals.
