Chipotle Takes Guns Off Its Menu
Chipotle is asking customers not to bring guns into its stores. The Denver-based company has traditionally complied with local laws. But the re-think came after Chipotle says gun rights advocates recently brought military-style assault rifles into one of its restaurants. “The display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers,” said a company statement.

Dick Cheney says President Obama scrapped the Bush administration’s missile defense system in Europe “at the mere request” of Russian President Vladimir Putin. But the new strategy was based on two things: evidence that Iran had accelerated its short- and medium-range missile programs and technological advances that allowed the U.S. to develop what former Defense Secretary Robert Gates called “a far more effective defense.”

Four Christians Arrested and Charged with Blasphemy in Pakistan
Distributing Christian Literature Seen as Affront to Islam
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that four evangelical Christians, including three women and a male pastor, were arrested after being accused of blasphemy in Pakistan. The Christians have been charged under Article 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code, which punishes those who “outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.” Local Islamic extremists have begun holding protests against the Christians demanding exemplary punishment be meted out on the accused Christians.

Everything You Need to Know Regarding Meriam Yahia Ibrahim’s Case
We, the staff of ICC, have prepared all the information you need to become immersed in Meriam's case. For the latest details regarding Meriam's appeal, view our petition calling on the Government of Sudan to immediately and unconditionally release Meriam. And be sure to join us in speaking out #ForMeriam on social media and otherwise.

China’s Zhejiang Determined To Contain Religion
Zhejiang government document reveals strong focus on containing religion through demolition campaign
ICC Note: Beijing claimed yesterday that "anti-church" campaign is a "misunderstanding" and "the Chinese government earnestly protects the rights of Chinese citizens including safeguarding their freedom of religious beliefs", according to the Telegraph. However, a government document of Zhejiang province shows a completely different story than Beijing's statement. ChinaAid's reports that the document encourages local leaders to be tough in their interactions with religious groups and shows Zhejiang province's determination to "rectify" the the phenomena that "religion has grown too fast" and of "too many religious sites" within one year.

Pastor Saeed Beaten and Returned to Prison
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Pastor Saeed Abedini, an Iranian-American, was severely beaten and forcibly transferred from the hospital where he’d been receiving treatment back to prison. The transfer came without warning and again raises concern for his safety as he is returned back to prison.

Nigerian Parliament Extends Northeast State of Emergency to Combat Boko Haram
ICC Note: Senators in Nigeria’s parliament today unanimously approved a 6-month extension of states of emergency placed on Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in May of 2013. Boko Haram, an Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) has plagued Northeast Nigeria with its terror campaign in pursuit of establishing a separate Islamic state to be ruled by its especially harsh brand of Sharia law. Among those targeted, including government officials, teachers, students, and moderate Muslims, have been Christian, who have been slain by the thousands since Boko Haram came under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau, a radicalized fundamentalist Islamic scholar bent on exerting violence.

Ukraine Bishop Released by Separatists; Pressure on Church Remains
ICC Note: After being abducted by likely pro-Russian separatists, Ukrainian bishop Aleksey Demidovich was finally released from captivity on May 17. As tensions grow between Ukraine and Russia, the Christians in Ukraine are facing added challenges. However, despite the adversity, churches such as Demidovich’s continue to spread hope through prayer and the distribution of the Gospel.

What Is In the Chinese Church Destroyer’s Mind?
Zhejiang: more crosses and churches demolished. Domestic and official Churches persecuted
ICC Note: The church demolition started and intensified after Xia Baolong , the party secretary of Zhejiang province, inspected a church and noticed that the cross was too conspicuous and there are too many crosses in Zhejiang province. He later gave the order to demolish or rectify churches and crosses. What is in the party secretary’s mind? The article quoted Xia Baolong’s interview with Xinhua in February 2014 that "hostile forces of the West" had infiltrated the Christian communities. He even warned the Party of Wenzhou city against the influence of the underground church community in July 2013.

Christian Prisoner Conditionally Released from Iranian Prison
ICC Note: An Iranian prisoner who had been convicted of “disrupting national security” and propaganda against the regime for meeting together as Christians was conditionally released from prison. Kourosh was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison after being arrested in early 2012 and tried eight months later. The conditional release is not an indication of pardon, but a procedural option available once prisoners have served at least half of their prison sentence.

Action Is Being Taken To Help Christians In The Middle East
ICC Note: While Christians across the Middle East are facing some of the most intense persecution in their history, many feel that they have been forgotten. A grassroots effort has brought together over two hundred religious leaders to show that this is not the case. They have issued a pledge of solidarity and a call to action on behalf of Christians across Iraq, Syria, and Egypt.

Pregnant Mother and 20-Month-Old Son Await Appeal on Sudanese Death Row
ICC Note: Meriam Yahia Ibrahim continues to await the submission of her letter of appeal following her sentencing to 100 lashes and death May 15. Arrested and detained on February 17, charged on March 4, convicted on May 11, and sentenced Thursday, Meriam (eight months pregnant with her second child) and her 20-month-old son Martin have suffered detention in a Sudanese prison for months. And, with the appeal expected to take as many as two years, their suffering could be just beginning.

Beijing Claimed “Anti-church” Campaign a “Misunderstanding”; The Fact Shows the Opposite
Thousand Christians forced from church as demolition campaign spreads
ICC Note: This article points out that, in the name of "removing illegal constructions", 1,000 Christians had been evicted out of a mega-church, the Holy Love congregation, in Ningbo city, Zhejiang province. The church is facing demolition. Amid a series of church and cross demolitions, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded for the first time to the accusations of China engaging in a anti-church campaign, according to the Telegraph. Beijing claimed that the the church demolitions took place because those sites built against construction regulations. However, the fact shows that even government-approved church buildings were completely or partially removed, such as the cross demolition of Baixi Christian Church in Wenzhou.

BJP’s Victory in India Will Have No Impact on Religious Minorities in Nepal
ICC Note: The government of Nepal has congratulated Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for their recent victory in India's national elections. Nepal, also a Hindu majority nation, has Hindu nationalist groups very similar to India's BJP. Commenting on the BJP victory, officials from the Nepali government claimed that the victory of Hindu nationalists in India will have no bearing on Nepal's secular identity.

Christians Call on Modi to Create an Inclusive India
ICC Note: With BJP and Modi set to form India's next national government, Christian leaders are calling on the next prime minister to create an inclusive India. Many fear Modi will revert to his sectarian and Hindu nationalist past which many fear will harm Christian and other religious minority communities across India. It remains to be seen as to how Modi and his new government will treat Christians, but many hope it will be different from his past.

Forced Conversion of Women Continues to Plague Pakistan’s Christians and Hindus
ICC Note: Forced conversion and forced marriages continues to be a major human rights concern for religious minorities in Pakistan. It is estimated that at least 1,000 Christian and Hindu women are kidnapped by Muslim extremists, forced to convert to Islam and then married to their captors. In many cases, it is almost impossible for the families of these women to recover their lost members. Through violence, intimidation and corruption, the captors are often able to manipulate the Pakistani courts into confirming the legitimacy of the conversion and the marriage.

Pakistan Continues to Unjustly Use Blasphemy Laws against Christians
ICC Note: Christians in Pakistan have complained of a double standard being applied when it comes to enforcing the country's controversial blasphemy laws to religious minorities. When applied in a case where the accused is a Muslims, in many cases the accused just has to apologize publicly before being let go. When applied in a case where a Christian is accused, it is very difficult to stop Pakistan's courts from passing down a death sentence. Please pray for Christians forced to live under Pakistan's blasphemy laws.

Research explains action of drug that may slow aging, related disease
A proven approach to slow the aging process is dietary restriction, but new research helps explain the action of a drug that appears to mimic that process -- rapamycin. The advance moves science closer to a compound that might slow aging and reduce age-related disease. The lead researcher said that this study "could provide a way not only to increase lifespan but to address some age-related diseases and improve general health."

Cognitive test can differentiate between Alzheimer's and normal aging
A new cognitive test that can better determine whether memory impairments are due to very mild Alzheimer's disease or the normal aging process has been developed by researchers. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that the number of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease will increase from 5 million in 2014 to as many as 16 million by 2050. Memory impairments and other early symptoms of Alzheimer's are often difficult to differentiate from the effects of normal aging, making it hard for doctors to recommend treatment for those affected until the disease has progressed substantially.
