U.S. Middle East Strategy
The Middle East remains today a troublesome area for the United States. American interests in the region are threatened by a host of adversaries from a resurgent Russia, a hegemonic Iranian desire and campaign of subversion, and Jihadi threat that has morphed from Al Qaeda to the Islamic State. Moreover, despite long U.S. investments and alliances, the region remains deeply anti-American. To complicate matters further, with the exception of Israel, U.S. allies in the region are problematic ones not only in terms of their domestic policies, but also because they are often in conflict with one another, undermining U.S. strategies and threatening U.S. interests.
China Never Was A Superpower—And It Won’t Be One Anytime Soon
"The world by 2049 will be defined by the realization of Chinese power,” write Bradley Thayer and John Friend, referring to the centenary of the founding of the People’s Republic. “China,” these American academics tell us, “will be the world’s greatest economic and political force.” Must Americans accept the inevitability of Chinese dominance of the international system?
China’s Tide Is High, But Is It At High Tide?
If China’s explosive economic growth since the beginning of reform in 1979 is a unique success story, no less impressive has been the concomitant growth of its military and political power, as well as its global influence. Few could have predicted that within one generation of Richard Nixon’s visit to Beijing in 1972, China would vie with the United States for the banner of global leadership. By any measure, China’s efforts to surpass American predominance in the world must be taken seriously, and in some cases, may even seem to have succeeded. And yet, at the moment when its tide has reached heights not seen for centuries, Beijing may find its power at high tide, almost certain to recede to some degree.
From Trade War To Tech War To Cold War
If you had told me 30 years ago America would be in another Cold War with another communist superpower by 2019, I would not have believed you. If you had told me that, simultaneously, socialism would be the height of fashion with young Americans, I would have directed you to a psychiatrist. But here we are. Three decades ago Francis Fukuyama published his seminal essay “The End of History?”, hailing the victory of liberal capitalism over all its ideological competitors, but especially over communism. The essay he needs to write today is “The Upend of History?”

TRANSLATING THE TRINITY
We too often seem to forget in our liturgical debates that even the most central aspects of our liturgical life, such as the Scriptures and the Creeds, were not revealed to us in English, and that therefore much of our prayer is already an exercise in translation. The question of how we name the persons of the Trinity in particular involves a number of linguistic issues to which it may be helpful for us all to be more attentive. While on the surface it might be easy to assume that words such as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have fixed meanings that are identical across languages, times, and cultures, the truth is that all words have a semantic range of meaning, and such semantic ranges may expand or contract or migrate over time and across different languages. It would surely be a poor kind of orthodoxy that would insist reflexively only upon the persistent use of a particular word while paying no attention to the ways in which the meaning of that word may have shifted across the centuries. Therefore, fidelity to the tradition that we have received demands that we be open to a fearless consideration of the ways in which our language has changed over time, and that we reflect on whether the words we use still adequately convey the meaning that we intend by them.

RIGHT-CENTER BIAS, MIXEDRecently, Mexican president Lopez Obrador officially declared the end of Mexico's “neoliberal” model. For him, “neoliberalism” is the cause of many of Mexico's social problems: from its corrupt political system, to the fact much of its population still lives below the poverty line as Mexican billionaires get richer. Since this topic has become extremely popular in Mexico it is necessary to ask ourselves: What really is “neoliberalism”? Is Mexico “neoliberal”?
One of the great myths of modern journalism is that it is possible for journalists to report facts and make judgments in an objective manner. This myth has come under increasing attack in recent years as the mass media's continued hostility to the Trump administration has become ever more fevered. Nevertheless, many both inside and outside the profession cling to the idea that "objective" reporting is possible.
Practically all critiques of markets are fundamentally ignorant and never address the actual issue. And they've been ignorant in the same way for about (at least?) a century. The so-called "market socialist" response to Mises' claim that socialism (the common/public ownership of the means of production) is impossible illustrates this. The real issue, which is the shifting of the market's boundaries in pursuit of new value creation, is never, as far as I know, part of the critique of markets. Critics always focus on whether production is undertaken rationally and efficiently. Which always misses the more fundamental point of what may be possible. This is where markets excel, because of the division of intellectual labor in pursuit of profit and avoidance of loss with the consumer as final arbiter of value. Maybe this is the reason critics avoid such a discussion because they have no solution to it.

The chase started in Spokane Valley when a trooper gave chase. Balderas was driving a 2018 Black Ford F150 pickup, which blew all its tires and was driving on its rims, sending sparks flying into the air. The chase, which lasted about an hour, ended 6 miles east of Creston along U.S. Highway 2 when the truck rolled over from a Pursuit Intervention Technique maneuver by troopers. No one was seriously injured.

US Senators Introduce Bill to Stop F-35 Jets' Transfer to Turkey Amid S-400 Row
US senators have introduced a bipartisan bill to stop transfer of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey amid a major rift between the NATO allies over Ankara's purchase of Russia's S-400 missile defence systems. This comes shortly after Reuters reported citing anonymous sources that the US is mulling not only denying the delivery of F-35s to Ankara amid tensions over Russia's S-400 deal with Ankara, but also cutting Ankara out of the jet's supply chain.
