Judge Blocks Trump's Asylum Policy--Opens Borders
Thousands of migrants are standing at our southern borders. Crime is rampant. Passions are high. They want into the US, and they want in now, claiming to have "a right" to enter our country. Yesterday we learned that a federal judge, Jon S. Tiger, a Barack Obama appointee, has blocked President Trump's asylum policy. On this Thanksgiving week, the media is calling the migrants "modern-day Pilgrims" ---denied by a tyrant president. Is our southern border the new Plymouth Rock? Or not? If not, why not?

Pilgrims And Power—The Military Aspects Of Thanksgiving
The actions of Myles Standish in defense of Plymouth are the subject of some debate, but he and his militiamen succeeded in defending the colony against potential enemies, enabling it to survive in a dangerous and hostile environment. So as you eat your turkey this Thanksgiving, raise a glass in honor of the first colonial soldiers, whose defense of their new North American home made possible the eventual rise of the United States of America.

Thanksgiving Dinner Costs Less Time and Money
Reading the news, it can be easy to get the impression that everything is going downhill and it may feel hard to find reasons to be thankful or optimistic. But as Thanksgiving approaches, know that some things are improving – to see the evidence for yourself, spend some more time exploring HumanProgress.org, which chronicles advances in areas of wellbeing as diverse as medical technology and gender equality. One thing that has improved is the cost of Thanksgiving dinner itself, according to recently released numbers from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF). In fact, the inflation-adjusted cost of a Thanksgiving dinner has declined for three years in a row. Thanksgiving dinner is now the most affordable that it has been in more than a decade and is 26 percent lower than in 1986, when the AFBF began its annual survey on the matter.

Where is the Spirit in the Lord’s Prayer?
Last week I had a curious discussion with someone online. Commenting on one of the events for Remembrance, I noted that the prayer said by the Christian leader took the form of a general invocation of a deity, but wasn’t actually a Christian prayer. ‘What do you mean by a Christian prayer?’ came the response. ‘One that is Trinitarian’ I replied. ‘Well, in that case, the Lord’s Prayer isn’t a Christian prayer’. I was rather struck by that, not just as I hadn’t considered it, but also because it explains something about how the Lord’s Prayer is commonly used.

US Judge Drops Female Genital Mutilation Charges as 'Unconstitutional'
According to Judge Bernard Friedman from Michigan, Congress, as it was passing historic legislation on female genital mutilation, “overstepped its bounds,” as the statute law has to be tested and approved - or not - individually by each state.
Should clergy learn New Testament Greek?
“To imagine a language is to imagine a form of life”. There are many excellent reasons for learning a language other than one’s own mother tongue. Doing so opens up horizons that would otherwise be closed. We are regularly reminded of the beneficial effects of language-learning for children, with all its concomitant social and intellectual advantages. We also know that contemporary British society is quite exceptional, in comparison to most societies past and present, in being functionally monolingual. The ascendancy of a variety of standard English and its global dominance represents a victory (one might say) for our economic and social outlook, and also a bitter loss of voice – not just for the speakers of suppressed native languages, but also for the Anglophone would-be victors. When it comes to spoken languages, I too am functionally monolingual. This is where most (though by no means all) clergy in these islands and in their sister churches begin.
