Texas Judge Strikes Down Obama’s Affordable Care Act as Unconstitutional
A federal judge in Texas on Friday struck down the entire Affordable Care Act on the grounds that its mandate requiring people to buy health insurance is unconstitutional and the rest of the law cannot stand without it. The ruling was in a lawsuit filed this year by a group of Republican governors and state attorneys general. A group of intervening states led by Democrats promised to appeal the decision, which will most likely not have any immediate effect. But it will almost certainly make its way to the Supreme Court, threatening the survival of the landmark health law and, with it, health coverage for millions of Americans, protections for people with pre-existing conditions and much more. In his ruling, Judge Reed O’Connor of U.S. District Court in Fort Worth said the individual mandate requiring people to have health insurance “can no longer be sustained as an exercise of Congress’ tax power.”

President Makes Surprise Trip to Arlington Cemetery to Help with Wreath Laying
Each December, Wreaths Across America helps decorate the graves of our heroes at veterans cemeteries. President Donald Trump paid a Saturday visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where thousands of volunteers had just taken part in the rain in the annual holiday wreath-laying tribute to those who served — and died — in America’s wars. Trump made the unscheduled stop to the famous military ceremony about 2:15 p.m. ET, hours after the event began.

Or: stories my grandfather told me
Daniel Marshall: I remember taking my grandfather for a drive around Victoria, traveling the countryside of his youth, and reliving stories of the past about Old Victoria. There was nowhere that we passed by that did not spark memories. My grandfather would be 116 years old this month and I miss him dearly.

Sue Lani Madsen: When dealing with housing, start by defining the problem
Lack of affordable housing is a different problem than homelessness, and both will get worse without the right focus. It’s possible to develop decent policy without formal stakeholder meetings or a multiyear, million-dollar study by experts. But it’s difficult to impossible without a good definition of the problem.
