A Blog for Liturgical Ressourcement
This article by Henri de Villiers was first published in 2014 on the blog of the Schola Sainte Cécile, to commemorate the centenary of the start of the Great War. It is translated and republished here and at New Liturgical Movement in honor of Armistice Day, and the centenary of the first armistice, which occurred this past Sunday.

The idea that “we”—the few, the elect, the highly-educated—can plan the development of an economy from the confines of a government (or think tank) conference room should have been dead and buried once the Warsaw Pact nations abandoned communism. But it reappears again and again, often under the guise of “fairness” rather than efficiency. This is, in part, due to cultural narratives about capitalism that have deep roots.
Few economic concepts elicit such strong reactions as that of monopoly, and the policy intended to address it—antitrust regulations (called competition policy in the European Union). Yet, both supporters and opponents of antitrust regulations agree on one fundamental point—that effective competition is vital to the American economy and the welfare of its citizens. However, they differ in how the law should encourage this.

PECUSA AND THE SCOTTISH MYTH
"Our bishops today trace their succession to Samuel Seabury ... so our roots really are here in Aberdeen, Scotland. Indeed, Scotland is our mother church" - Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. "That shared history shapes a strong bond between the SEC and The Episcopal Church in the USA" - from the website of the Scottish Episcopal Church. On 14th November 1784, non-juring Scottish bishops consecrated Samuel Seabury as bishop. Significant? Yes, it was not insignificant. Does it make the Scottish Episcopal Church the "mother church" of PECUSA/TEC? Absolutely not. To begin with, early PECUSA statements make it abundantly plain that Protestant Episcopalians in the newly independent United States looked primarily to the Church of England to define their identity, not the Scottish Episcopal Church.

By refusing to go to the Kiev Caves Lavra to meet with the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church yesterday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko passed up on the chance to establish relations with the canonical Church, His Eminence Metropolitan Jonathan (Yeletskikh) of Tulchin and Bratslav said in an interview with First Cossack today.
Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople has written a letter in commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor, a manmade famine in the Soviet Union, published on the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. The Patriarch opens his letter: “As every year, we [communicate] with all of you with a heavy heart from the historic and martyric Mother Church of Constantinople while prayerfully commemorating the Holodomor of the Ukrainian People, the tragic and inhumane events of the years 1932-1933, when countless human beings lost their lives through deliberate and brutal famine.” Aware of how the Patriarchate’s actions in Ukraine appear to the rest of the Church, Pat. Bartholomew further writes: “Therefore, we intervene [in Ukraine—OC] by obligation … not for ourselves and not for demonstrating worldly strength and power.” Explaining his Church’s decision to enter the ecclesiastical territory of another Church, he writes: “This great responsibility of the Mother Church, the Holy and Great Church of Christ, certainly has no limits.”
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s administration has refused a journalistsic request to provide a copy of the agreement signed between the head of state and Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople on November 3, reports Ukrainian News. According to Ukrainian law, documents must be provided within 5 working days following such a request.
