C.S. Lewis Saw Government as a Poor Substitute for God
That means it contains all the flaws and foibles of mortals so a free people must confine it, restrain it, and keep a wary eye on it.

Putting the Arrest of Huawei Executive Into Context
While President Donald Trump was meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South America about two weeks ago to resolve outstanding trade issues, authorities in North America were arresting the daughter of a Chinese telecommunications titan on fraud charges. For many in Washington, China’s government is a common denominator that links these two issues. However, it’s not in the interest of the U.S. to simply group everything related to China under the China (or trade) policy umbrella, potentially blurring the lines between our principles and the protection of the rule of law.

Needed: An Effective Fiscal Framework to Restrain Spending and Control Debt in the United States
The U.S. is on a fiscal collision course, requiring immediate and lasting budgetary restraint to protect current and future generations from ever-growing debt. A lack of political will and urgency to address growing fiscal pressures has contributed to inadequate fiscal rules and a dysfunctional budget process. Switzerland and Sweden offer valuable lessons for the factors that undergird an effective fiscal framework and allow fiscal restraints to work as intended.

Obama’s School Discipline Guidance Could Be Doomed. Here’s Why That’s Great News.
This year started with a reminder that we cannot take the safety of our children for granted, and Washington has ended the year by taking the issue seriously. The Federal Commission on School Safety released its final report Tuesday and recommended the removal of federal guidance that has cast the specter of federal investigation over school districts since 2014. The report calls for rescinding federal directives on student suspensions and expulsions (otherwise known as “exclusionary discipline”) that were based on specious legal grounds and have had troubling results in schools around the country.

Americans Want Paid Leave, Until They Realize They Have to Pay for It
Fully 74 percent of Americans say they support a national paid family leave program that would provide workers with 12 weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child, or to care for their own or a family member’s illness. But not if they have to pay for it.

The Federal Reserve Should Not Compete With Private Firms
ast Friday was the public comment deadline for a seemingly harmless Federal Reserve solicitation. The request was titled “Potential Federal Reserve Actions To Support Interbank Settlement of Faster Payments.” And, indeed, there would be nothing to see here if the Fed wanted only to support such an effort. But one of the “potential actions” the Fed Board is considering is to develop its very own real-time settlement system. This approach makes many private sector actors anxious because no private company wants to compete with the feds.

Trump’s 5% Spending Cut: A First Step Out of Budget Mess
It’s $125 billion. That’s how much more the federal government will have to borrow in fiscal 2020 just to maintain its current level of discretionary spending. It equates to a $384 bill for every person in the United States. With the national debt already approaching $22 trillion, that’s more than taxpayers can afford. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to happen. In October, President Trump sent a message to his cabinet: “Get rid of the fat, get rid of the waste.” The president’s statement was more than just hyperbole. He backed it up with a policy directive, telling agencies to cut 2020 budgets by 5 percent (a total of at least $62 billion).

Counter the Electro-Magnetic Pulse Threat
A century ago, life without electricity wasn’t hard to imagine. But today? There’s hardly an aspect of daily life that doesn’t rely on a steady supply of it.
And in an instant, it could all grind to a halt.

Officials say Trump has ordered full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria
President Donald Trump has ordered a rapid withdrawal of all 2,000 U.S. ground troops from Syria within 30 days, declaring the four-year American-led war against the Islamic State militant group as largely won, officials said Wednesday. “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” the president said in a Twitter post Wednesday morning. He offered no details on his plans for the military mission, nor a larger strategy, in Syria. But Pentagon officials who had sought to talk the president out of the decision as late as Wednesday morning argued that such a move would betray Kurdish allies who have fought alongside U.S. troops in Syria and who could find themselves under attack in a military offensive now threatened by Turkey.

Forget Mary Poppins: Three Reasons Real-Life Nannies Are Ruining Childhood
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you must have heard that Disney is releasing a new Mary Poppins movie. Just in time for the holiday season, Mary Poppins Returns continues the story of the nanny who is “practically perfect in every way.” She swoops into the home of the Banks family and sorts out not just the children but the parents as well. It’s a wonderful story… but real-life nannies are very different. There’s a great deal that could be said on this topic, but for now, I’ll list three of the biggest problems I’ve observed with nannies: 1. Nannies are Glorified Guard Dogs; 2. Nannies Resent Their Charges; 3. Nanny-hiring Parents Don’t Know How to Look after Kids.

THE ADVENT EMBER DAYS AND THE AGRARIAN VISION OF THE ANGLICAN IMAGINATION
In contemporary Anglican calendars the Ember Days - when they are actually mentioned - have a quite narrow focus on "prayer for those ordained or preparing for ordination" (the CofI BCP 2004).  The 1662 and other traditional Calendars, however, retained a deeper understanding of the purpose of these days.  Firstly, they were included alongside other "Days of Fasting, or Abstinence".  Secondly, they were referred to as "The Ember-days at the Four Seasons".  They are, in other words, days of prayer and penitence to mark the passage of the seasons, days given over to pray for a good winter, spring, summer, autumn.  As such they embody our dependence on the earth, our creaturely existence, the giveness of life.  Four times a year - as we prepare for the darkness and cold of winter, the riotous joy of spring, the long, glorious days of summer, the rich splendour of autumn - the Ember Days call us to prayer and fasting for the season that lies ahead, that we would know blessing and flourishing.

Nothing chases a person out of the Catholic Church and away from Christ faster than a bad priest. The priest does not have to be a child molester. He may simply be arrogant, patriarchal, insensitive or just stupid. More people leave the church because of bad priests than because of disagreements over dogma.

China Warns US Against ‘Turning Space Into the New Battleground'
US President Donald Trump's recent call for the creation of a new space agency within the Pentagon caught the attention of Chinese officials this week, and Beijing is stressing its concern that the US will weaponize space. Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said on Wednesday that the move by the Trump administration would turn space into a "new battleground."

Shard Architect Renzo Piano Chosen to Design New Bridge in Disaster-Hit Genoa
Genoa-born Renzo Piano has been picked by the Italian authorities to design the replacement for the Morandi Bridge. The structure collapsed in bad weather in August, killing 43 people and injuring dozens. This will last for a 1,000 years and will be built of steel," said Piano in September. Piano, 81, says it can be constructed within 12 months and he has provided the design free of charge to his hometown.
