1969. CBS News Correspondents React to Nixon's "Silent Majority" Speech
This text is adapted from a transcript of the CBS News broadcast which aired following President Nixon's address to the nation on November 3, 1969. It features Dan Rather, Marvin Kalb, and Eric Sevareid. Later, Vice President Agnew would single out Kalb's analysis as well as commentary by Bill Downs and Bill Lawrence on ABC News, dismissing it as "instant analysis and querulous criticism."

How Misguided Environmentalism Is To Blame For California’s Wildfires
The saddest part about these fires in California is that they are self inflicted. Californians should not allow such mismanagement to continue.

THE VATICAN INTERVENTION IN BALTIMORE
By quashing the American Catholic bishops’ bid for an independent investigation into the burgeoning sex-abuse scandal, the Vatican has left the US hierarchy in an impossible position. The bishops cannot ease the anger of an enraged laity without appearing disloyal to Rome; they cannot maintain unity among themselves without further alienating their flocks; they cannot restore their own credibility without damaging the credibility of the Holy See.

A solution to stop our veterans from dying while waiting for medical care
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has a simple but crucial mission. The agency’s website quotes President Lincoln’s promise to veterans to describe it:“To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan’ by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s Veterans.” Unfortunately, the VA has not done a good job living up to this mission lately. Just a few years ago it was widely reported that thousands of veterans died waiting for care. This is unacceptable. At the same time, the agency has callously allowed countless VA medical professionals to perform union business rather than serve veterans. And the kicker, this union business is done at the taxpayers’ expense. This practice, known as union official time, is not cheap, either. In its last report on the cost of official time, the Office of Personnel Management estimates that VA employees spent about 1.1 million hours on union matters rather than serving veterans. These activities include lobbying Congress, attending union conventions, and filing grievances. In fiscal 2016, official time at the VA cost $49 million. It is important to note that these figures are estimates and likely lowball the hours spent on official time and the costs.

AGAINST ANGELIC ANTHROPOLOGY: THE MATTER OF BIOLOGICAL GROWTH
The Baptism of young Children is in any wise to be retained in the Church, as most agreeable with the institution of Christ - Article 27. Yesterday's post quoted from an essay by the late John Hughes which has probably been the work which has most influenced my theological development in recent years - his 'The Possibility of Christian Culture' (2012).  Hughes critiqued that "significant body of Christian theologians" (Yoder and Hauerwas are mentioned) who have attacked "cultural Christianity": "it is my claim that they are implicated in certain novel departures from Christian tradition in modernity and ultimately depend upon an overly angelic anthropology that renders key traditional Christian practices incoherent." Hughes goes on to particularly identify "a suspicion at least or outright rejection of infant baptism".

CBS News’ Major Garrett Rebukes CNN’s Jim Acosta for His Conduct
Although many mainstream media members supported CNN’s Jim Acosta and offered little criticism of him after the White House yanked his press pass after his controversial conduct during a recent briefing with President Donald Trump, CBS News’ Major Garrett rebuked Acosta for his conduct on Friday on “The Larry O’Connor Show.” Garrett made his comments before federal Judge Timothy J. Kelly’s initial ruling ordering the White House to temporarily and immediately reinstate Acosta’s press pass on Friday. Garrett then threw some shade at Acosta when asked whether he thought the CNN reporter violated White House briefing protocols, saying, “I do my level best to not make myself part of story, and I think the best journalists operate that way.” The CBS News reporter, who worked for Fox News during the Obama administration, also told Hill TV’s Krystal Ball and The Daily Caller’s Saagar Enjeti on “Rising” on Fridaythat  it “should be noted” the Obama administration tried to “demonize” Fox News.

Democrat Stacey Abrams Says Republican Brian Kemp Will Be Next Governor of Georgia
Stacey Abrams, the Democrat in Georgia’s governor race, acknowledged Friday that she cannot defeat her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, but vowed to file a federal lawsuit challenging the “gross mismanagement” of the state’s elections.

Why President Trump ‘Doesn’t Owe Anyone a Free Pass’ to the White House Briefing Room
A federal judge has just ordered that the White House must return — immediately and temporarily — the press pass of CNN’s Jim Acosta, Fox News reported. Acosta himself made a brief statement to the media and thanked others for their support. (Fox News had sided with CNN.) Yet New York Times best-selling author Brigitte Gabriel, even before Friday morning’s action from the judge, strongly believed and still believes that President Donald Trump does not owe anyone a free pass to the White House briefing room.

Here, then, is the former first lady’s report on where that process stands with her, 54 years after she was born to Fraser and Marian Robinson, who raised her in a cramped apartment on Euclid Avenue. It is a story of a father’s slow decline from MS and his stubborn refusal to submit, of going to Harvard, of landing the prestigious job, of meeting the brilliant law student who was always late to everything, of winding up with a backstage pass to the presidency. And yes, it is the story of how white Republicans, unable to countenance the idea of a black family in the White House, yet unable to say that forthrightly, dubbed her “angry,” called her a man, called her a terrorist, remarked on her backside. She recalls a chyron on Fox “News” that referred to her as “Obama’s Baby Mama … implying an otherness that put me outside even my own marriage.”

Officials meet with displaced residents
Elmer City – When a fire burned three homes at Elmer City’s Grandview Trailer Court, Oct. 3, a safety issue many had feared came to pass – it was fortunate no lives were lost, Colville Business Council chair Rodney Cawston said. A couple weeks after the fire, the Colville Business Council voted on a resolution to close the tribally owned property, citing “a dangerous state of disrepair and improvements [that are] cost prohibitive…”
