What's happened to the vanished Uighurs of Xinjiang?
China is accused of locking up hundreds of thousands of Muslims without trial in its western region of Xinjiang. The government denies the claims, saying people willingly attend special “vocational schools” which combat “terrorism and religious extremism”. Now a BBC investigation has found important new evidence of the reality.

Feds Collect Record Taxes Through November; Still Run $305.4B Deficit
The federal government collected record total tax revenues of $458,653,000,000 in October and November, the first two months of fiscal 2019, according to the Monthly Treasury Statement released today. Even with these record tax collections, however, the government still ran a deficit of $305,394,000,000 for the first two months of the fiscal year. That is because while collecting a record $458,653,000,000 in taxes, the government spent $764,046,000,000.

Today’s Energy & Environment News (subscription required) has an article titled “Wheeler preaches federalism on water, not cars.” The gist is that various critics claim the Trump-era Environmental Protection Agency, under Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler, is an “inconsistent” and “hypocritical” advocate of federalism in environmental policy.

Trump Shouldn't Lower His Guard on North Korea
Following the Singapore summit, President Donald Trump unilaterally decided to end allied “war games” (a North Korean derogatory term, previously rejected by Washington and Seoul) on the Korean Peninsula. That decision has been the gift that keeps on giving…for North Korea. The latest iteration of the gift came Friday with the announcement that next spring’s U.S.-South Korean Foal Eagle combined exercise is canceled. That makes at least eight military exercises scrapped by Washington and Seoul since the Singapore meeting. And that’s a problem.

States Have a New Opportunity to Lower Insurance Premiums and Expand Options. Here’s How.
The Trump administration is offering welcome relief to Americans struggling with high premiums under Obamacare premiums and a lack of insurance choices. The administration has taken a series of regulatory actions to do the following: * Make short-term, limited duration policies widely available and give consumers the right to renew those policies. * Make it easier for small businesses and independent contractors to band together for greater insurance purchasing power. * Propose to allow employers to contribute to tax-advantaged accounts, which their workers could then use to purchase portable insurance coverage. The Department of Health and Human Services also has made it easier for states to promote more affordable, flexible insurance coverage options by obtaining waivers from restrictive Obamacare regulations.

ADVENT AS PREPARATION ... FOR CHRISTMAS COMMUNION?
One significant aspect of Caroline Divine Mark Frank's Advent sermons is the emphasis on Advent as a season of preparation for receiving the Sacrament at Christmas.  "The days of holy Advent", he says in his sermon for Advent I, "is one of the ways prescribed by the Church for our better coming to the Feast". A sense of the focus in the next sermons is given when he points to Advent setting before us the One who has come in the Incarnation, will come in Judgement, and "He that cometh still ... in His sacraments".

Trump Signs Executive Order to Help Impoverished Communities
Very few media outlets covered this major news in the U.S. — and there are a few simple reasons why. President Donald Trump took a big step to help disenfranchised communities this week with an executive order. The president signed an executive order Wednesday to bolster the already existent Opportunity Zones established via the GOP tax bill in 2017. The intention is to direct resources to the already designated 8,700 Opportunity Zones; businesses in these districts will be subject to less restrictive regulations.
