In brief:  From Staff and Wire Reports

Obama withdraws court nomination

Washington – President Barack Obama withdrew his nomination of Caitlin Halligan to a federal appeals court Friday, handing a victory to Republicans in the Senate who twice blocked his pick for the key judicial post.

Calling the obstruction by Republicans unjustified and unacceptable, Obama said he agreed to Halligan’s request to be pulled from consideration even though she would have served with distinction on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Senate Republicans blocked Halligan’s confirmation for a second time in early March, arguing that Halligan is too liberal and citing her work on lawsuits against gun manufacturers and on behalf of illegal immigrants. The National Rifle Association also staunchly opposed her confirmation.

The D.C. appeals court and its makeup are of critical importance to the president, with oversight of many of the actions his administration takes.

Hillyard family loses home in fire

A Hillyard home was destroyed Friday night as a fire ripped through the structure and displaced a family of four and their pets.

Several fire engines and crews arrived to the house in the 5000 block of North Regal Street around 7:20 p.m. after a resident called 911 when they saw smoke coming out of the attic.

Battalion Chief Bill Donahoe described the fire as “stubborn” because it caved in the roof in several spots and continued to burn for more than two hours. A back draft created a dangerous situation for crews as well.

Donahoe expected crews to be at the home for the majority of the night, spraying water through the roof.

One person was in the home at the time of the fire. Firefighters rescued one cat, but had to retreat from thick smoke. Two cats were still missing Friday night.

A firefighter who helped open up the home’s roof and ventilate the fire injured his knee and ankle and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Non-English Web address suffixes OK’d
NEW YORK – The agency in charge of Internet addresses says it’s given preliminary approval for 27 new suffixes – all in Chinese, Arabic and other languages besides English.

They are the first approved out of nearly 2,000 bids submitted last year. The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers previously said it was reviewing the non-English bids first. ICANN expects additional approvals in the coming weeks.

The new suffixes could be available for use as early as the middle of the year.

Proponents of the new suffixes hope the expansion will lead to online neighborhoods of businesses and groups around specific geographic areas or industries and help non-English speakers avoid typing English domain names like “.com.”

Goodyear debuting new blimp next year
AKRON, Ohio – Goodyear is building the first of a new generation of its iconic blimps.

The tire maker said Friday that the blimp built in Germany by ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik will be assembled at Goodyear’s Wingfoot Lake Hangar near the company’s headquarters in Akron.

Construction will take up to seven months. Airship certification and crew training are planned for early next year.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. says the new blimp will be larger, faster, more maneuverable and carry more passengers than its current fleet.
