On the last night of the Democratic National Convention [6 Sep 2012], a retired Navy four-star took the stage to pay tribute to veterans. Behind him, on a giant screen, the image of four hulking warships reinforced his patriotic message.  But there was a big mistake in the stirring backdrop: those are Russian warships.

This 1911 photo shows Mission Street, looking south. A horse-drawn
wagon is parked on the east side near the entrance of the old World
Building, while The Daily World and post office were housed
in the World Building. The Hotel Del Mundo was upstairs.
Next door was the Harlin Building, at Mission and Orondo.

100 years ago — 1913
The Cascade Scenic Highway has been financed and its construction will be completed within two years. This much was assured when a petition was presented to Chelan County commissioners today and which is practically certain to be granted. The effect will be to make the Merritt Road district begin five miles above Chiwaukum and extend 20 miles west to the summit of the Cascades, which is the western boundary of the county. Owing to the fact that the Great Northern Railway traverses this district, the property valuation is over a million and a half dollars. The county road now extends to Merritt.

50 years ago — 1963
The Spanish Castle is no more. All that remains of the once-proud dwelling along an isolated stretch of the Columbia downstream from Wenatchee is rubble. It disappeared over the winter. Owner Mose Carr tore it down because the place where the two-story structure sat will later this year be a lake bottom. Wanapum Dam will back the water up over the site and the surrounding fields and range area. Lester Coffin built the stucco structure in the Tarpiscan area in 1917-18.
