Cathedral leads procession with medieval prayer against pandemic
On Wednesday night, the Cathedral of St. Paul led a procession around the block and as part of an ancient Roman Catholic ritual, the “Penitential Procession in Time of Mortality or Epidemic.” In a spiritual response to the coronavirus COVID-19 respiratory disease pandemic that is spreading worldwide, more than 100 people took part in the walk around the downtown block in Birmingham where the cathedral sits and gathered inside for prayer.

The Staggering, Heartless Cruelty Toward the Elderly
A global pandemic doesn’t give us cause to treat the aged callously. Crises can elicit compassion, but they can also evoke callousness. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve witnessed communities coming together (even as they have sometimes been physically forced apart), and we’ve seen individuals engaging in simple acts of kindness to remind the sick and quarantined that they are not forgotten. Yet from some quarters, we’ve also seen a degree of cruelty that is truly staggering.

Inside China's high-stakes campaign to smear the United States over coronavirus
If you listened to Chinese state-run media, you'd think President Trump went to China and released vials of COVID-19 on groups of unsuspecting men, women and children. Beijing has been bending over backward trying to convince the world that the United States is the real culprit behind the quickly spreading virus that's already claimed more than 4,600 lives across the globe. It's a high-stakes strategy for the Asian nation fighting to keep its superpower status amid a national lockdown and palpable anger over claims that Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus, at first covered it up, triggering a worldwide health and economic crisis.

Coronavirus: as many as 10,000 in Britain may already have it, says PM
Up to 10,000 people may already have coronavirus in Britain and many families should expect to lose loved ones before their time, Boris Johnson warned on Thursday as he set out measures less stringent than those taken by other countries. ... Johnson’s moves came as the stock market in London suffered its blackest day since 1987, with panic selling – triggered by Donald Trump’s surprise ban on travel between the US and the Schengen zone – surpassing the worst seen in the 2008-09 financial crisis. Fears that the US president had turned the possibility of a global recession into a certainty sent share prices into a tailspin and by the end of a day of turmoil, the FTSE 100 index was down 639 points – a drop of almost 11%. ... Thursday’s press conference was told that Britain, where the death toll had risen to 10 and where there are 596 diagnosed cases, is believed to be four weeks behind Italy, which has seen 1,000 deaths and more than 15,000 infections. In the UK, the infection is expected to build to a peak in May or June. Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, said that worst-case scenario planning projected that 80% of the country would contract the virus, with a 1% mortality rate. This equates to more than 500,000 deaths.

The Evolution Of Arab Popular Opinion Toward Iran, And Iranian Self-Perceptions
The Middle East’s conflicts and autocracies—hostile to independent researchers and pollsters—make it one of the most challenging regions of the world to accurately assess public opinion. The competing popular demonstrations in the region both before and after the killing of Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani illustrates the confusion. Both allies and adversaries of the Iranian regime cite protest photos and videos to show that their side constitutes the majority. Rather than gauging popular opinion by counting crowds on a given day, a recently published book based on Zogby Research Services’ last ten years of polling in both the Arab world and Iran offers seven key trends about the evolution of Arab public opinion toward Iran, as well as Iranian self-perceptions.

Coronavirus’s economic danger is exponentially greater than its health risks to the public. If the virus does directly affect your life, it is most likely to be through stopping you going to work, forcing your employer to make you redundant, or bankrupting your business. The trillions of dollars wiped from financial markets this week will be just the beginning, if our governments do not step in. And if President Trump continues to stumble in his handling of the situation, it may well affect his chances of re-election. Joe Biden in particular has identified Covid-19 as a weakness for Trump, promising “steady, reassuring” leadership during America’s hour of need.

Coronavirus will bankrupt more people than it kills — and that's the real global emergency

China government spokesman says U.S. military may have brought virus to China
A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry suggested on Thursday the U.S. military might have brought the coronavirus to the Chinese city of Wuhan, which has been hardest hit by the outbreak, doubling down on a war of words with Washington. China has taken great offence at comments by U.S. officials accusing it of being slow to react to the virus, first detected in Wuhan late last year, and of not being transparent enough.

Large Scale US Airstrikes Underway Against Iran-Backed Militias In Iraq
After earlier in the day President Trump authorized the Pentagon to "do what we need to do" in terms of a military response against Iran-backed militias believed responsible for Wednesday's rocket attacks on Camp Taji, which killed one British and two American soldiers, and wounded at least a dozen more, there are widespread reports the US has initiated massive airstrikes over southern Iraq late Thursday night.
