What Allowed Locusts to Multiply by the Millions? Plague Spreads Far Beyond Africa Across Middle East to China
The plague of locusts that is marching through Africa is also invading other continents as well. While billions of the locusts are ravaging East Africa and devastating crops, massive groups of the insects are also swarming through the Middle East. There have been reports in countries like Yemen, Iran and Pakistan, even into India, as well as new reports of locusts crossing into China. In the Middle East, the locusts proliferated after unusually heavy rains and two cyclones that dumped a vast amount of water in the deserts of Oman.

China is disinfecting and destroying cash to contain the coronavirus
As the novel coronavirus outbreak continues to batter China, the country's central bank has implemented a new strategy to contain the virus -- deep cleaning and destroying potentially infected cash. The new measures, announced by the People's Bank of China on Saturday, aim to contain the spread of the virus, officially known as Covid-19. There is still a lot unknown about the virus, which has infected more than 71,000 people globally and killed 1,775, the majority in China -- but it appears to survive for at least several hours on surfaces, according to the World Health Organization. This is why buildings in affected areas are regularly disinfecting elevator buttons, door handles, and other commonly-touched surfaces -- and why people are worried about cash, which changes hands multiple times a day.

Beavers cut flooding and pollution and boost wildlife populations
Beavers have alleviated flooding, reduced pollution and boosted populations of fish, amphibians and other wildlife, according to a five-year study of wild-living animals in Devon. The report, which will help the government decide whether to allow wild beavers to return to England after being hunted to extinction more than 400 years ago, concludes that the species has brought measurable benefits to wildlife and people.

Nineteenth Century Inequality Not As Bad As We Think
A proper interpretation of consumption data shows that the 1800s fostered an egalitarian shift in wealth distribution. A recent study by Vincent Geloso and Peter Lindert makes a big deal out of consumption bundles. By disaggregating purchases by working classes and upper classes, they make a revolutionary discovery: beginning earlier than we used to believe, the poor’s standards of living improved faster than those of the rich. Contrary to the tired claim that capitalism involves the rich getting richer while the poor get poorer, it seems that during the 19th century the opposite was true.

Bernie Sanders's Long History of Pushing Government Takeovers of Private Markets
The term "socialism" properly refers to government ownership of industry and service providers. In this respect, Bernie Sanders has a long record of proving he's a true socialist.

Social Security Is a Terrible "Investment"
Social Security, the primary retirement savings tool and biggest tax for millions of Americans, is a bad deal, critics contend. They argue that mandatory Social Security is a poor investment because it only provides an average annual income of some $17,000. This is a lousy return on the decades of tax payments, critics contend. They say most would obtain superior returns with private investments.

Socialism: A Brief Taxonomy
From orthodox Marxism to anarcho-syndicalism, here's a brief guide to the many flavors of socialism. The most striking and frequent blunders are the identification of socialism exclusively with Marxism, the confusion between the concepts of socialism and communism, and the claim that fascism and National Socialism belong to the right, to name a few.

Getting There: After glacial progress, East Central braces for effects of North Spokane Corridor’s eventual arrival at I-90
On Tuesday night, a legion of WSDOT officials were at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in East Central to talk about what will be final leg of the NSC’s very long journey south from Highways 2 and 395 to its eventual intersection with I-90 in that neighborhood – and about the impacts it will have. Planners have long known that the connection’s effect on East Central will be major. But those plans have changed.

Faith and Values: Politics and patriotism should not stand in the way of learning to love God’s children
On Jan. 3, in the dead of night, U.S. missiles struck two cars leaving the Baghdad airport. A man named Qasem Soleimani and several officials from Iran-backed militias were killed.

Then and Now: The 1960 state Democratic convention at Spokane Memorial Coliseum
In May of 1960, two-term Republican President Dwight Eisenhower was on his way out and his vice president, Richard Nixon, was on the campaign trail for the Republicans. On the Democratic side, candidates, mostly U.S. senators, looked for support. On May 27, Washington’s Sen. Warren “Maggie” Magnuson, Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson, and Gov. Albert Rosellini welcomed three presidential hopefuls to Spokane at the state Democratic convention, a meeting the size of which the city had rarely seen. Almost 2,400 people, including 1,843 of whom had paid for the $10-a-plate dinner, squeezed into the Spokane Memorial Coliseum. Some carried “Jackson for Vice President” signs, encouraging the candidates to pick Washington’s junior senator for VP. The 1960 political convention drew U.S. Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy, and Missouri Sen. Stuart Symington.

Leonard Pitts Jr.: Vote blue, no matter who?
Vote blue, no matter who. That’s the fall election mantra of Democrats desperate to cleanse the White House of its current occupant. But here’s the question some African Americans are now asking: What if the “who” is Michael Bloomberg? What if the former New York City mayor is the man chosen to contend against Donald Trump? Shall we vote blue if all it offers is the chance to replace a stupid racist with a smarter one?
