In a survey of 1,000 likely U.S. voters conducted last week, 47% think America’s intelligence agencies have their own political agenda. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say the U.S. intelligence community generally performs impartially and 15% are undecided.

First Steps for the Trump Administration: Unleash America’s Labor Force
It must be a priority to reverse course from Obama administration employment policies that aimed to direct the private behavior of workers and employers by limiting how individuals can work and companies operate. Labor agencies in the new administration should create a framework to promote workplace dynamism by allowing individuals the leeway they need to negotiate their own contract terms and allow job creators the flexibility to innovate.

Canada's Private Refugee System Fosters Generosity, Acceptance, Kindness
Canada's refugee system shows how getting politics out of the way (even partially) can reduce tensions and promote integration. The Syrian refugees are warmly welcomed because the sponsorship is privately funded by Canadian churches, non-profits, charities, and bands of individuals who extend compassion at their own expense, rather than use tax dollars. In short, the refugees are wanted and not an economic burden.

Disability Assistance Programs Disincentivize the Working Poor
Disability-assistance programs discourage work by conditioning assistance on limited or no work. Public policies work against people with disabilities and low-income parents who want to work.

Editorial: Market-driven Christianity has boomed in the US but now it is beginning to bust.
Is Christianity ceasing to matter in the US? The question might seem absurd in the light of statistics that show a country which still publicly respects religion to an extent difficult for a European to imagine. Fewer than a third of all Americans admit that they seldom or never go to church.

Then and Now: Western Union Life Building
Banker Robert Rutter, hotel man Louis Davenport, mill owner J.P. McGoldrick and Henry Richards of Washington Water Power, along with several others, organized Western Union Life Insurance in 1906. The Catholic Diocese of Spokane had lost the church offices, or chancery, to the path of the new interstate and purchased the former insurance office in 1966. For 40 years, the new chancery on Riverside housed the church’s administration. Our Lady of Lourdes, the diocesan cathedral, is next door. The diocese sold the chancery building in 2006. The former insurance office and Spokane Catholic Diocese chancery at 1023 W. Riverside Ave. is now a multiple-use office building owned by Centennial Real Estate Investments, an affiliate of the Cowles Co. The diocese still has offices on the third floor.
