Trump pledges US-first foreign policy
Economic protectionism and war on Islamist terrorism will form the heart of US foreign policy, Trump has said. He did not rubbish Nato, but indicated interest in a new Russia alliance. In a brief address in front of the Capitol building, he issued “a new decree to every foreign capital” that “from this day forward, we will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth”.

Trump: New sheriff in town
Europe will be keenly watching Trump's speech for clues on future policy, but the 20-minute address is likely top focus on rhetoric about making America "great" again.

A US dream, or nightmare, for Europeans?
Europeans often like the American people more than they like American foreign policy and US presidents. But the Trump presidency could win favour among Europe’s growing swell of populists.

How Rick Perry Can Free Up US Energy From Government Favoritism
For too long, the government has distorted U.S. energy markets. If confirmed, Perry should work with Congress to reduce the size and scope of the agency’s intrusive reach into energy markets.

2. Eliminate spending on applied research and technology commercialization.
3. Refrain from issuing new energy efficiency standards, and urge Congress to repeal the old energy conservation standards.

"The leading voice of the British left, since 1913."

In recent weeks, prominent thinkers on both the local and national stage have let their imaginations run wild with self-delusion, failing themselves and readers in the process. I’m thinking of the curious and deeply unconvincing case that the incoming administration in the US is set to unleash a rolling tide of goodwill on America’s cities.

As Donald Trump enters the White House, it’s time for the left to plan how it will deny his programme legitimacy.

The story of American immigration has been flowing inexorably in one direction. Even Trump's 24/7 tweeting can't turn the tide.

We compared the two presidents on trade, foreign affairs and climate change – so you (really, really) don't have to.

Donald Trump ushers in a new era of kakistocracy: government by the worst people
Trump will lead the whitest, most male cabinet in memory – a bizarre melange of the unqualified and the unhinged. "What fills me with doubt and dismay is the degradation of the moral tone,” wrote the American poet James Russell Lowell in 1876, in a letter to his fellow poet Joel Benton. “Is it or is it not a result of democracy? Is ours a ‘government of the people by the people for the people’, or a kakistocracy rather, for the benefit of knaves at the cost of fools?”
