Jerusalem’s churches wait to hear details of Israeli PM’s tax and land announcement
Bank accounts belonging to the Anglican diocese in Jerusalem remain frozen with a tax demand still outstanding, despite an announcement that the controversial new municipal taxes would be put on hold. Greek Orthodox, Catholic and Armenian leaders closed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre last week as tensions rose over the controversial tax introduced by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat. The doors were opened this morning after a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had set up a task force to negotiate a solution with the churches.

The US-based Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Pittsburgh and the breakaway Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh have announced a “comprehensive agreement” over the future of nine parishes which seceded from the diocese in October 2008. The agreement “resolves disputed questions over the ownership and use of the church property that have lingered since the congregations voted to leave The Episcopal Church,” they said in a statement. The nine parishes and the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh are part of the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA), an independent church which is not a member of the Anglican Communion.

With the siren song of the omnibus spending bill calling, members of Congress would be wise to resist pressures to include increases in online sales taxes in the fiscal 2018 spending bill. To do otherwise would be inconsistent with the popular tax cut recently enacted and may mean meeting an unpleasant political fate in the fall.
If you wanted a counterterrorism technology that could match Amtrak in terms of derailments, you couldn’t do much better than to use “stand-off explosive detection technology” in the transportation environment. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been touting its testing and potential regular use in New York. Good politics in New York? You bet. A way for the Department of Homeland Security to burn up more budget authority and taxpayer dollars? Oh, yeah. But in terms of actual policy? The idea of cost-effectively making Americans safer? This technology is pretty much guaranteed to careen off the tracks.

Facebook Flags Site For Lying About Facts. There Was One Giant Problem.
On Thursday, Facebook sent a message to an internet site accusing it of purveying false information, then warning the site that such behavior could trigger “their distribution reduced and their ability to monetize and advertise removed.” There was one problem: Facebook used Snopes.com as its fact-checker, and never bothered to check that the site in question, the Babylon Bee, is a satire site.

Authorities: California family lived in filthy desert hovel
The mounds of trash, old toys and furniture caught the attention of a Southern California sheriff’s deputy passing through the desert earlier this week. As he approached, he spotted a hovel cobbled together with plywood and plastic sheeting. And then came the shocking discovery that a couple and their three children – ages 11 to 14 – had been living there for several years without running water, bathrooms or electricity.
