Syria’s Islamist Rebels Force Christian Activist to Wear Veil
ICC Note: A personal story highlights how far the Syrian conflict has come from its beginnings as a push for more rights and freedoms from a dictatorial regime. Some Christians were among those originally pushing for greater freedoms, but now they see that movement has been replaced by extremist groups seeking to impose an Islamic state. “Leave this country, it’s not ours anymore,” was the conclusion of a Syrian Christian.

Aid Proposed To Stop Christian Persecution In The Middle East
ICC Note: America needs to do more to address the persecution of Christians, was the takeaway from a panel on the issue. The Center for American Progress organized the event that brought together a panel of researchers to address the issue, that in the words of Paul Marshall “is getting much worse.” The reality is that a wide-range of actors, including government and non-government organizations need to be active to support churches and address the issues that foster religious persecution.

Two Thousand Kessab Christians Find Safety in Latakia, Syria
ICC Note: More than 2,000 Christians have fled their homes in the Syrian city of Kessab. Extremist fighters, largely from the al-Nusra Front took the city, that until now had been relatively peaced. Many of the families who fled have been forced to stay in the church in the city of Latakia or attempt to find housing with relatives. Kessab is a largely Christian city and witnesses reported that the churches in the city were desecrated by the militants as they took control.

Congress: Obama Must Press Saudi Arabia on Human Rights
ICC Note: As President Obama is about to meet with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, 50+ members of Congress are calling for him to address human rights issues while he is there. Saudi Arabia, while a close ally of the United States, is one of the most restrictive governments in the world in preventing any form of Christian worship. This has serious implications when considering that millions of foreign workers, many who are Christian, live in Saudi Arabia and yet have no churches or places of worship.

Death Toll Goes Above 150 Following Last Week’s Attacks on Christian Villages in Nigeria
The death toll following last weeks attacks on Christian villages in central Nigeria has risen above 150 according to local government officials. Attacks on Christians in Nigeria' northern and central states has dramatically increased in 2014. Christians are being attacked almost on a weekly basis. Fulani herdsman, who are mostly Muslim, and the extremist group Boko Haram are at the forefront of perpetrating these attacks on Christians. What can be done to stop the violence?

Final Draft of Resolution on Sri Lanka Tabeled at UNHRC
The final draft of a resolution to investigate human rights abuses in Sri Lanka has been tabled in the UNHRC. Among the human rights abuses to be investigated is the persecution of religious minorities in Sri Lanka. Over the past two years, attacks on Christians and their places of worship has dramatically increased. In 2013, over 100 churches were violently attacked and some were forced to close down. Provided below are two sections of the final draft that pertain to human rights abuses focused on religious minorities. The question now is whether this investigation will cause Sri Lanka to actually change.

No correlation between medical marijuana legalization, crime increase: Legalization may reduce homicide, assault rates
A professor of criminology found that legalization of medical marijuana is not an indicator of increased crime. It actually may be related to reductions in certain types of violent crime. The study tracked crime rates across all 50 states between 1990 and 2006, when 11 states legalized marijuana for medical use: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Since the time period the study covered, 20 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized marijuana for medical use.

Crows understand water displacement at the level of a small child: Show causal understanding of a 5- to 7-year-old child
New Caledonian crows may understand how to displace water to receive a reward, with the causal understanding level of a 5- to 7-year-old child. Understanding causal relationships between actions is a key feature of human cognition. However, the extent to which non-human animals are capable of understanding causal relationships is not well understood. Scientists used the Aesop's fable riddle -- in which subjects drop stones into water to raise the water level and obtain an out-of reach-reward -- to assess New Caledonian crows' causal understanding of water displacement.

First ring system around asteroid: Chariklo found to have two rings
Astronomers have made the surprise discovery that the remote asteroid Chariklo is surrounded by two dense and narrow rings. This is the smallest object by far found to have rings and only the fifth body in the Solar System — after the much larger planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — to have this feature. The origin of these rings remains a mystery, but they may be the result of a collision that created a disc of debris.

Engineered bacteria produce biofuel alternative for high-energy rocket fuel
Researchers have engineered a bacterium to synthesize pinene, a hydrocarbon produced by trees that could potentially replace high-energy fuels, such as JP-10, in missiles and other aerospace applications. By inserting enzymes from trees into the bacterium scientists have boosted pinene production six-fold over earlier bioengineering efforts.
