Funeral of China’s Underground Catholic Leader Draws 5,000
ICC Note: On Saturday, in Shanghai, an incredible event took place. 5,000 Christians gathered to mourn the death of Bishop Joseph Fan Zhongliang, the leader of China's underground Catholic church who spent two decades imprisoned for his faith. That authorities even allowed the funeral to take place is something of a small miracle, though they did insist that the funeral not be held at a church, and clergy ordained by the Chinese government's Catholic Patriotic Association were told to stay far away. Many, to their credit, attended anyway.

USA: Atheists Demand Christian Governor Delete Biblical Tweet
ICC Note: In the ongoing battle over the spiritual culture of the United States, atheists have stepped up attacks on public speakers, recently calling for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to delete a religious tweet. Governor Walker tweeted Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." The Freedom From Religion Foundation, who issued the demand the tweet be removed, said the verse sounds "more like a threat, or the utterance of a theocratic dictator, than a duly elected servant." Who knew that tweeting scripture could be so controversial for a public official?

Churches Under Fire in Russian Takeover of Crimea
ICC Note: The hostile takeover of the Ukrainian Crimea by Russia is having religious repercussions. Catholic leaders, long repressed under the Soviet Union, have been ordered by pro-Russian forces to abandon their congregations in Crimea and flee to mainland Ukraine. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic church has refused, saying their clergy will remain with the sheep. At least three priests have been detained and released by Russian forces. ICC will continue to follow the situation as it develops.

“Since the removal of President Morsi from office in July, Egypt’s vulnerable Christian minority has been caught in the middle of a highly destructive political showdown between the Muslim Brotherhood and the military-backed government,” reports Fox News.  More than a hundred churches, homes, and businesses have been attacked and many Christians have been killed.  Download ICC's Special Report on Egypt and learn why Egyptian Christians took part in the protest to remove Morsi, and their hopes for the future.

Time For Obama To Speak Out For Religious Freedom in Saudi Arabia
Is promoting religious freedom abroad a priority in President Obama’s foreign policy? A few members of Congress certainly think it should be. On Thursday, the President will be getting a letter from more than 50 representatives urging him to publicly address human rights and religious freedom during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia.

Death Toll Rises To 150 in Attack on Nigerian Christians, Including Pastor’s Wife And Three Children
ICC Note: Following a brutal string of attacks a week ago, more than 150 have been killed and thousands more displaced. The attacks came as gunmen stormed three villages, setting more than 200 houses on fire along with three churches. The Nigerian government has come under strong criticism for their ability to protect citizens from attacks such as these, and those carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist group in the north of Nigeria.

Religious Freedom in Kazakhstan is a Farce
KAZAKHSTAN: Religious freedom survey, March 2014
Kazakhstan is a country that proudly proclaims that their citizens have the right to religious freedom. However, in action, this freedom is regularly infringed upon and religious minorities, especially Christians systematically experience persecution. Things have been steadily getting worse, as this religious freedom survey so aptly portrays.

Mombasa, Kenya Church Gun Attack Kills At Least Six, Injures 21
ICC Note: The death count in a violent attack on a church in Kenya has now risen to six. There were at least 21 injured when gunmen opened fire in the Joy Jesus church in the city of Likoni, Kenya. Included among those killed is an Assistant Pastor Philip Masela Ambesta. There still has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Government Forces Russian Church To Liquidate
“In Russia, the church is supposed to have registration. Without registration, no one has the right to practice their religion. The church was stripped of its legal registration.”

Reports Cite 80 Dead in Kessab, Syria; Churches Desecrated
ICC Note: Latest reports out of Syria show rebels from the Al-Qaeda linked al-Nusra Front have captured a number of Christian villages on the Turkish border. The villages were home to more than 670 Armenian Christian families. Many of these were evacuated to other cities before the forces arrived, some who did not make it out in time were taken captive. During the assault at least three churches were desecrated, according to witnesses. For months Christians have feared about their fate if militant Islamic groups take control of more areas.
