The Copts Choice: Where Do Coptic Christians Stand On Egyptian Politics?
ICC Note: As Egypt prepares for a presidential election, the situation for Christians remains unclear. Christians saw persecution rise across the country under the Muslim Brotherhood. Churches see positive steps being taken to start creating a more unified country, not hardened along religious lines. Unfortunately, Christians continue to be the target of violence, especially the increasing numbers of kidnappings throughout rural Egypt.
Captive US Pastor Hospitalized in Iran Amid Calls for Release
ICC Note: Pastor Saeed Abedini remains in custody in Iran, serving an eight year prison sentence for his religious beliefs. According to the most recent reports, Saeed is currently being held in a hospital where he has received some treatment for injuries sustained from beatings, but has not received a necessary surgery for internal bleeding. Numerous world leaders have advocated for his release and yet Iran seems determined to continue holding him.
Violence Against Christian Copts in Egypt Continues Despite Fall of Muslim Brotherhood
ICC Note: Violence Egyptian Christians have been described as “endemic forms of violence and abuse” throughout many parts of Egypt. A recent report highlights that the nine months since the removal of Mohamed Morsi has been a time of intense persecution of the Coptic minority community.
U.S. Supreme Court Debates Major Religious Freedom Case
ICC Note: The case of Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby was debated by the Supreme Court on Tuesday in Washington D.C. The case has garnered widespread attention as the Christian owners of Hobby Lobby, a major retail chain in the United States, reject the provision of the new health care law that forced them to provide insurance to employees which covers abortion inducing drugs. Hobby Lobby owners say providing such coverage would clearly go against their deeply held religious beliefs, but under the current law failure to provide the insurance would result in hundreds of millions of dollars of fines every year for the company.
Indonesia Bans ‘Noah’ Film Amid Fears of ‘Provoking Reaction’
ICC Note: In a surprise move, Indonesia has become the latest in a line of majority Muslim nations to ban screenings of a new Hollywood film depicting the Biblical story of Noah. Typically regarded as an example of a religiously diverse and tolerant Muslim-majority democracy, in recent years major incidents have indicated that the nation of 250 million is becoming increasingly hostile towards religious minorities, including Christians. In 2012, at least 50 Christian churches were forcibly closed by local governments after protests by radical Islamic groups.
House Church Grows in China Despite Raids, Arrests, and Ban
ICC Note: The leader of a house church in Shandong Province is reporting that his church has only grown after authorities raided services last year and ordered the church to cease meeting. Pastor Zhou, who himself was taken into custody at one point, says “Do they think the church is banned just because they say they ban it?” Zhou said. “Who can fight the will of God? They did say they banned the church, but they couldn’t do it. Now, we have more people than before.”
Hindu Nationalists Beat and Parade Half Naked Christians in India
In early March, Christians living in Jharkhand state were attacked by Hindu nationalists and later accused of forcible conversion. Members of this Christian community were beaten, mocked, forced to march through the village half naked and then forced to worship Hindu idols. Now, these Christians have been charged with forcible conversion, a crime in India. Attacks like this are becoming more and more common in India. Hindu nationalism is at the root of these attacks and the impunity which is enjoyed by the attackers. Please pray for those who are persecuted in India.
China: Christian Lawyers Detained in “Black Jail”
ICC Note: While China has announced it is abolishing it's notorious system of labor camps, where "dissidents" could be sentenced to up to four years of imprisonment without a trial, other methods of punishing and imprisoning house church Christians remain. So called "black jails" exist outside the judicial system. Four human rights lawyers investigating one of these jails in Northeast China have been detained. Two have disappeared and two others have been sentenced to two weeks of detention. This report says that the black jail was being used to hold house church Christians among other political "criminals."
Asia Bibi’s Blasphemy Appeal Postponed… Again
The hearing of the appeal for Asia Bibi in Pakistan has been postponed a second time after her accuser did not appear in the courtroom. In 2009, Asia was falsely accused of blasphemy after drinking from a well that villages claimed was for Muslims only. After arguing with the Muslim villagers, a local cleric filed a blasphemy case against Asia, the only Christian in the village. Since then, the case has become internationally known after Asia was sentenced to death in 2010. Please pray for justice to be done in this case.
