Coulee City Neighbors in the News
by Dorothy Graff

Our sincere sympathy to the family of Marilyn Swearingen, who recently passed away.
The NCW Fair drew many locals to Waterville this past week.  Among them were Harold and Shyla Evans, who attended the Jerrod Niemann concert on Friday evening.
The Ben Adams family went on Wednesday and stayed until Sunday.  Morgan received blue ribbons.  Jenny's mother, Betty Davis of Curlew, and grandparents, David and Joyce Adams, also came to see Morgan's entries.  They also enjoyed the concert Friday night.
John and Dorothy Graff, son Johnny and granddaughters, Emily and Brittany also attended the Fair on Sunday.  Thursday the family enjoyed an afternoon at Spring Canyon and had a barbeque dinner while there.  Monday morning Grandpa John and Dad John took the girls to Naches where they were met to return to Toledo.  Their two-week visit sure went by fast!
Visiting Don Raymond and Margaret Barker over the weekend were his daughter and son-in-law, Jeff and Jennifer Barlow, from Spokane.
Sheri Behne was busy at the fair all week.  Daughter Erin Miller and granddaughters , Abra and Lucinda from the Tri-cities stayed with them.  Ella Osborne and Austyn Kenney showed their horses.
Nine members of the Highlighters Art Club entered their works in the Fair at Waterville.  They wer Dorothy Graff (two blue ribbons), Kathy Downing (one blue and one red), Nellie Schrock (two red ribbons), Alice Boarman (one blue), Marilyn Dayen (two red), Teddy Kirk (two blue), Jean Fletcher (one blue and one red), Mary Anne Kirshner (two red) and Nancy Behne (two blue).
Nancy Behne attended the NCW Fair Saturday to watch Sheri & Ella Osborne compete in their horse events.  Nancy had a chance to visit with Erin Miller & her two girls, Abra and Lucille who were staying with Sheri at Waterville, too.
John and Shirley McLean had Kathy and John Ludders from Ithaca, New York and their daughter and husband, Faith and Esom, from Beirut, Lebanon visiting on Thursday and Friday.  Kathy and John are college friends from WSU.
Randy Pitts has been at the Game Farm for 10 days trying to get everything caught up.  They finished harvest in 3 days as there wasn't much to cut, then Jim helped him get most of the seeding done.  Randy will be back to finish seeding.  He will also help with the deer season that opens Saturday for bow hunters.  Just watching takes a lot of time.
Joanne met with an unusual accident last Wednesday.  She had bought a sack of lemons 3 days before and knats started appearing everywhere.  Randy, looking for fruit, opened the sack of lemons and thousands of the bugs flew out to join the rest.  By Wednesday there were so many of them in the utility porch window, Joan was swatting them when she backed into a huge fan they had brought out of a bird pen to help cool the porch.  Feeling a tug on her leg she looked down and blood was everywhere.  A bolt on the side of the fan had ripped into her leg.  She rang the bell on the outside of the door and finally Randy heard it.  He put pressure on the leg and finally got it to stop, after much blood was lost.  He held the pressure until Jim got home from getting a load of seed wheat.  They took her to the clinic in Nespelem where the doctor had to sew the ends closed of a torn blood vessel.  It couldn't be sewn together as it kept tearing apart.  The doctor was really upset the fan had been in the bird pen.  The wound was washed extensively while the doctor clamped the veins.  With her leg full of stitches, Joanne is healing slowly at home.
Jim and Joanne hope to sell the farm before winter and have two serious buyers looking at the farm.  Joanne has begun cleaning out and has taken at least 8 bags to the Goodwill and has 8 more ready to go.  Where did all this stuff come from?  She would like to say to all of us over 60, start duping it now!  Joanne has even gotten rid of half her dishes.  Jim is 81 and Joanne was 79 on August 3 and they are still chasing cows.
Sunday morning, August 19, Ben and Arlene Coats went to the American Legion in Moses Lake for breakfast and then did some shopping before returning home.  Monday Arlene went to Patty's Salon to have Kristen do her fingernails and pedicure.  Tuesday they traveled to Spokane for Arlene's doctor appointment.  Friday Ben and Arlene were in Ephrata to have the tires rotated and balanced on the Subaru.  Afterward they went to Moses Lake and met friends Grant and Karen O'Berg for dinner at the Steakhouse to celebrate Ben and Grant's birthdays.  Saturday morning Ben went out to Big Wally's to meet up with the Wenatchee Harley Owners Group for a ride to Lone Wolf Harley Dealership in Spokane, and then stopped at Fairchild Air Force Base on the way home.
John and Dorothy Graff received word Tuesday of the death of John's nephew, Robert John graff, of Sunnyside.  He was 38, the son of Robert Leroy Graff.

Hartline Happenings

Donna was the guest of honor on Sunday, as her family took her out for dinner at Boyd Place in Wilbur to celebrate her birthday.  Family members there were Marvin, Jesse and his wife, Sarah and baby, Beckham, Ron and Brenda and Jason Thomas.
BJ Sparling just returned from 6 days of tent camping with her daughter and granddaughter.  On their trip they discovered the fun of Geochaching.  This will have to be on their future schedule!  Went to Tonasket, Swan Lake and Gifford Campground.  They also drove down the San Poil Valley and the tree damage from the storm they had was unbelievable.  Trees had broken off about 12 or 15 feet high.  Friday night social hour at the Hartline Rec was great and they got to visit with many people.  Donna Thomas, Marilyn Moon and the Walkers were all there.  BJ finished her rock garden and put out all her new rocks from their last trip to Arizona.  Stop by and take a look.
Dave and Patti Goodwin attended the Lincoln County Fair in Davenport on Saturday where Dave pitched horseshoes.  He and his partner made third place.  After the tournament they visited with Jim and Kathy Hedgecock before returning home.  Sunday evening the Goodwin's visited Mike Swearingen and family at Coulee City.
Matt and Shawna Baergen have been given the "ok" to move into their new home.  It may be a busy week as they are expecting a new baby any day now!  McKenzie and Malorie are looking forward to school starting.
Bob and Pauline Dingman went to Spokane Thursday and stayed overnight.  Bob had some tests done with his cardiologist Friday, which took most of the day.  Their daughters, Evelyn Hamann of Spokane and Roberta Bigalk, of Selah, also came to the doctor's office and went in with their parents to talk to the doctor.  They haven't received all the results yet but a couple of the tests went well.  Friday evening they were dinner guests at the Hamann home, and they celebrated Hunter's 17th birthday.  Sunday they went to Blue Lake, to Doug's lake house.  Doug's six-year old, Landon, amused them with his determination in learning to wakeboard, with Marcus doing it with him.
John and Jan Heathman attended the Lincoln County Fair Friday at Davenport, to see granddaughter Stacy with her 4-H entries.  Stacy is a senior so this will be her last year.  On Sunday they attended the NCW Fair at Waterville, to see grandchildren, Ava and Garrett's projects.
Betty Rine reported sad news of her little dog.  He had become paralyzed and they had to put him down.
Nellie Schrock and Alice Boarman made two trips to Waterville, one to enter the Highlighters Art Club's artwork, and Sunday, they returned to bring them home.
