A New Year for Iran’s Christians: Will Anything Change?
As millions of Iranians celebrate the start of a New Year, International Christian Concern (ICC) continues to call attention to the flagrant persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in Iran. As the new Iranian president took office this past summer, his words promised a change in the respect of fundamental rights for Iranians. Unfortunately, those promises have not been met with action. Iranian-American Pastor Saeed Abedini is still serving out an eight-year prison sentence. He is just one of 49 Christians who remain imprisoned in Iran as a result of their faith. If this past year is a sign of things to come, many others may join them in prison this year.

Indonesian Church Faces Forcible Closure After Radical Muslim Protests
ICC Note: In certain areas of Indonesia, Christian churches regularly face the threat of being shut down and permanently sealed off by the local government. The forced closure of churches always comes after protests by radical Muslims organizations, such as the Islamic Defenders Front, pressure local officials into sealing off the building, usually using the pretexts of a faulty building permit. These permits can require years of applications and payments to government officials before being acquired, and even then they can be revoked easily. In 2012, ICC recorded 50 churches in Indonesia that were forcibly shut down by the Indonesian government after protests from radical Islamic groups.

Christian Prisoners in Vietnam Denied Bibles, Services
ICC Note: Vietnam is one of the five remaining Communist nations on earth. Religious groups, and especially Christians, are closely monitored and often threatened by the government. Many Christians are also driven to publicly campaign for greater freedoms based upon their religious beliefs, something which can be extremely dangerous in Vietnam. In this story, AsiaNews reports that Christian human rights and Democracy activists currently imprisoned in Vietnam are denied access to Bibles or to religious services.

US, Germany Raise Pastor Saeed’s Case by Name at UN Human Rights Council
As world leaders meet to discuss human rights issues around the world, the wrongful imprisonment of Christians for their faith is a key issue of concern. Officials specifically raised the case of Pastor Saeed Abedini who remains in an Iranian prison, serving a sentence of eight years for his faith activities. World leaders continue to call for the release of Saeed, an Iranian-born American citizen.

Government Helpless To Stop Massive Christian Cleansing
ICC Note: The continued attacks by terrorist groups and other gunmen have caused massive damage throughout both Northern and Central Nigeria. Despite efforts to implement a state of emergency the attacks have only accelerated in pace and severity.

‘God Has A Solution for Egypt’ – Coptic Bishop
ICC Note: Egypt has witnessed an intense period of turmoil over the past few years. In many cases, the divisions in the country seem to be hardened along ethnic or religious lines. For Egypt to move forward, there must be the freedom for all Egyptians, regardless of religious identity to freely worship and participate in public life. There needs to be intentional efforts to create a sense of unity, Bishop Angaelos of the Coptic church highlighted in an address to the UK Parliament.

Christian Mother in Somalia Beheaded in front of Her Daughters
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that a Christian mother of two and her cousin were beheaded by al-Shabaab Islamic extremists once their Christian faith was discovered. The extremists beheaded them publicly in front of her daughters and many of the villagers in the town square.

We Depend On the Christians of the Middle East
ICC Note: Why does it really matter if Christians stay in the Middle East? Why don’t they just leave? These questions cut to the heart of what is happening politically across the region. The vast majority of those living in the Middle East want to establish a system of governance that is inclusive off all peoples, regardless of their faith or other markers. If religious extremists are able to drive Christians out and establish an Islamic state, it will not be long before that same ideology will be applied on all those who fail to hold the extremist’s interpretations.

Nigerian Christians Live in Fear as Attacks Against Them Drastically Rise
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that attacks against Christians in Nigeria over the weekend claimed the lives of over 150 people. With such incidents on the rise in 2014, the current instability of the country is evident.
