Farmer’s Daughter: Washington state’s legislative attack on agriculture
Legislation making its way through the Washington state legislature would require dairy and fruit farmers to disclose to retailers whether they use slave labor on their farms. The legislation was introduced by State Sen. Rebecca Saldaña. The bill would require farmers to report any incidents of slavery, peonage, and human trafficking to retailers with more than $200 million in global sales. The bill passed in the state senate. It now waits for the state house to take it up.

Candace Owens Sends Out A Warning To Those Who Are Trying To Blame Her For The Mosque Shootings
The gunman who livestreamed the horrific shooting rampage at a mosque in New Zealand also had an online manifesto, and it’s raising serious red flags. For starters, he called Trump a “symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose,” which is utterly absurd. Additionally, he said he was influenced by none other than Candace Owens– a black conservative. His entire statement on her “influence” was bizarre.

________

from Conciliar Post

One of my favorite aspects of writing for Conciliar Post is the chance to engage with others of ecclesiastical traditions and theological persuasions different from my own. This requires the willingness to have my own convictions critiqued, and attempting, when able, to respond with all the charity and clarity that a sinner like myself can muster. AJ Maynard, in his recent post, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and the Pitfalls of Calvinism, has offered another opportunity to do just that. Therein, he presented a fairly common critique of “Calvinism” that, surprisingly, many self-professed Calvinists fail to answer well. I hope that I may briefly offer an answer to AJ’s well-taken criticism of a theological position that I hold to, whilst reflecting the model of Christian discourse that John Ehrett outlined earlier this week. AJ always brings stimulating ideas to the table in is posts, which I appreciate.  As I have done in the past, (though not with AJ specifically) I aim to use AJ’s post as an excuse to correct a regular misconception regarding Reformed doctrine.

“A Kentucky teenager sued CNN on Tuesday for defamation, saying the cable network falsely conveyed to viewers that he was the ‘face of an unruly hate mob’ confronting a Native American activist at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in January,” Reuters reported on Thursday this week. “The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann in federal court in Kentucky, seeks $275 million in compensatory and punitive damages over the videotaped incident in the nation’s capital.”

First "Nonbinary" Person in US: "It's All a Sham"
Jamie Shupe, the first man in the United States to be legally recognized as "nonbinary," now says it was all a sham. He was once the darling of the LGBTQ movement and the press. Now? He says they "treat him as though he does not exist." His story can be helpful to parents and grandparents whose children are being inundated with the myth of "gender fluidity" in their classroom.

Modern Monetary Theory Isn't Economics
MMT is a bait-and-switch wrapped in a sleight-of-hand. It focuses on debt and dollars rather than resources and products. Debt and dollars are merely tools we use to transfer ownership of resources and products. It’s the resources and products that matter. Shuffling debt and dollars merely changes the ownership of resources and products. It doesn’t create more.

The History Of Nuclear Warfare And The Future Of Nuclear Energy
On August 6, 1945, the world changed forever when the first atomic bomb hit Hiroshima, Japan, killing thousands of people instantly. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, decisively ending Japan’s involvement in World War II. Thousands of people died from radiation poisoning within a year. Since that earth-shattering day, the world has grappled with a controversial technology that not only poses strategic risks in its ability to wipe out humanity but also provides a potential solution to problems of sustainable energy.

Homeless camp in estuary burns; Gov. criticized for letting it happen
A fire Thursday night engulfed a portion of a sprawling homeless camp along SR 509 in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. Firefighters made quick work putting out the fire that was just feet from cars traveling at highway speeds. Nobody was injured but the fire represents an on-going issue with fires in encampments on state highway right-of-ways.

"IT IS ABSURD TO CALL THESE DOCTRINES FORGOTTEN TRUTHS": AGAINST TRACTARIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
In his 1843 Charge to the Clergy of the Diocese of Bangor, Bishop Christopher Bethell - following the controversy surrounding the publication of Tract XC - refuted both the Low Church claim that the early Tracts propagated Roman errors and the suggestion, by the Tractarians, that such teachings "had been forgotten and lost" within Anglicanism until rediscovered by the Tracts.  (This characteristic Tractarian view has exerted a baleful influence on Anglican self-understanding.)  Against both, Bethell asserted the significance and vibrancy of the pre-Tractarian High Church tradition.

Democrats Demand Right to Life for Kittens, But Block Bills to Stop Infanticide
What do cats have that newborn babies don’t? Democrats’ support. In one of the sickest ironies no one is talking about, Senate liberals picked this moment — 17 days after they voted to kill America’s perfectly healthy infants — to fight for the humane treatment of kittens. Maybe the DNC’s strategists are out to lunch, or maybe the Left really is this shameless, but I can’t wait to see some of these politicians standing on debate platforms next year telling the American people that when it comes to protecting living things: We chose cats over kids.

Bike-friendly Churches in Wales
In a campaign called SpiritCymru, rural Welsh churches — some of them isolated, disused, or facing uncertain futures — will become better-known. SpiritCymru, operated jointly by the Church in Wales and a mid-Wales businessman, will raise awareness of some architectural gems. SpiritCymru hopes to create awareness and raise support for struggling — even closed — rural churches by opening them as accommodation for touring cyclists.

Climate proposals need better cost analysis
For Washington to show leadership on climate change and build support for costly new carbon-reduction programs, the state must do a better job explaining how they’ll affect taxpayers. The lack of clarity around costs is painful as the Legislature weighs four different proposals to reduce emissions — a carbon tax, a low-carbon fuel standard, a requirement that utilities phase out fossil-fuel energy sources and a cap-and-trade system requiring large polluters to cap emissions or buy credits to offset them. Before finalizing any such policy, the Legislature must explain which provides the biggest bang for the buck. It should also consider investing in a robust, nonpartisan economic analysis program to help members and the public better understand the ramifications of major policies.

British Invasion: The Corbynization of the Democratic Party, and what to do about it
When the Democratic Party faced a revolt from its ranks for daring to propose condemning anti-Semitism, the scene gave those of us in Britain deja vu. The American Left is following the same script that led to the rapid radicalization of the Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn. It’s no longer a
mere talking point, a form of shorthand for journalists: The Democratic Party’s Corbynization is here, and it tacks so closely to what happened in Britain that it’s important for Americans to understand where we’ve been — and where they’re headed. The anti-Semitism fracas came about thanks to a series of bigoted statements made by Minnesota freshman Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who accused U.S. Jews of disloyalty to America. Omar was part of the January intake in the House of Representatives, alongside Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. The trio have become increasingly dominant in press and social media coverage, allowing them considerable influence in setting the agenda for the party in the public space. Tlaib has also levied the “dual loyalty” charge, and Ocasio-Cortez has used her prominence to defend them.
