PROPHET OF THE HUMAN-BUILT WORLD: AN INTRODUCTION TO JOHN RUSKIN
The Victorian sage John Ruskin (1819–1900) was a titanic figure in his own lifetime, and has not been wholly forgotten. But he is perhaps best remembered today for the bizarre incoherence of his romantic life, and especially for his unconsummated marriage to Effie Gray, which has been the subject of books, television and radio programs, and movies. Does he still matter? I argue that he does, because he is the deepest inquirer I know into the ways that human making shapes and is shaped by the material conditions of human lives, and how the relationship between that making and those conditions has enormous consequences for the spiritual lives of human beings.

Two men in jail after leading authorities on miles-long pursuit of stolen car Friday afternoon
A Soap Lake Police officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near Fourth Ave Southeast and Canna Street South in Soap Lake at 1:15 p.m. The vehicle had license plates attached that did not belong to that vehicle, according to police. The suspect vehicle stopped at first, but then fled as the officer was attempting contact. Grant County deputies pursued the vehicle roughly 22 miles from Soap Lake to Coulee City on state Route 17. Authorities said at times, speeds reached 114 mph on the highway. The pursuit traveled through Coulee City streets and nearly struck a police unit before continuing down Pinto Ridge Road. Sheriff's deputies were able to safely and successfully utilize spoke strips on the suspect's vehicle on Pinto Ridge Road. After several miles, the two passenger side tires disintegrated, but the vehicle continued. After traveling the 16 miles down Pinto Ridge Road from Coulee City, the suspect vehicle turned west onto Highway 28. The Soap Lake Police Department proceeded to initiate a PIT (Pursuit Immobilization Technique) maneuver on the suspect vehicle. The PIT maneuver was successful, causing the suspect vehicle to rotate and become disabled, immediately and safely ending the pursuit that continued for thirty-eight miles. Police said the two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody with no further incident. The driver, 23-year-old Triston Duplichan of Warden, had several outstanding arrest warrants. The passenger, 29-year-old Noe Duarte of Warden, also had several outstanding arrest warrants. They were booked into Grant County Jail on their outstanding warrants and several additional charges.

After 31 Years, Farewell to the Met Opera’s Grand, Gaudy ‘Aida’
“O terra, addio,” the doomed lovers sing at the end of Verdi’s “Aida,” bidding the earth adieu. Now, after 31 years and 245 performances, the time has come for the Metropolitan Opera’s sprawling, sturdy, utterly traditional, utterly delightful “Aida” production to join them in farewell. Peter Gelb, the company’s general manager, confirmed in an interview that when “Aida” returns, it will be to open the 2020-21 season in a new production directed by Michael Mayer and designed by Christine Jones, the pair that updated the Met’s “Rigoletto” to 1960s Las Vegas. Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct a starry cast: Anna Netrebko, Anita Rachvelishvili, Piotr Beczala and Ludovic Tézier.
