Puerto Rico to ask U.S. for statehood

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico’s governor will call a special legislative session to push for approval of a resolution urging the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama to honor the results of a recent referendum on changing the island’s political status.

Gov. Luis Fortuno said Saturday that Puerto Rican voters embraced statehood and rejected the current U.S. commonwealth status in the Nov. 6 ballot. He said Congress and Obama pledged to respect the results.

St. George’s 43, Wellpinit 34: Taryn Stamper scored 12 points and Alex West added 11 as the Dragons (1-4) beat the host Redskins (0-3). Dani Flett hit three 3s and finished with a team-high 13 points for Wellpinit.

Northwest Christian 49, Chewelah 25: Chanel Knight and Hannah Dietzen scored 11 points apiece as the Crusaders (4-0) beat the host Cougars (2-1). Northwest Christian outscored Chewelah 15-6 in the second quarter and led by 13 points at the half.

Colfax 40, Lakeside (WA) 35: Tayler Larsen scored 11 points as the Bulldogs (5-0) rallied in the fourth and edged the visiting Eagles (2-1). Amara Huber added nine points and Nicole Sheer pulled down eight rebounds for Colfax. Jocelyn Cook-Cox had seven points for Lakeside.Bonners Ferry 49, Newport 40: Jasmine Hill scored 12 points and Kendra Merritt added 10 as the Badgers (4-0) pulled away in the third quarter and beat the host Grizzlies (2-1). Bonners Ferry outscored Newport 13-3 in the fourth to take a 12-point lead into the fourth. Courtney Wiese and Holly Malsbury scored 11 points apiece for the Grizzlies.

Wilbur-Creston 64, Waterville 25: Jessica Boyer scored 12 points and Alex Potts added 11 as the Wildcats (3-1) gained control early and defeated visiting Waterville.

Brewster 60, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 35: Chandler Smith scored 26 points to lead the Bears past the host Warriors (3-2). Brynna Stevens led Almira/Coulee-Hartline with 14 points.
Northeast 2B

Reardan 81, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 35: Kelsey Moos had 23 points, 13 rebounds and five steals as the Indians (3-1, 1-0) got back to their winning ways with a win over the visiting Broncos (0-2, 0-1). Chantel Heath added 22 points, nine assists and five steals for the Indians, who had their 33-game winning streak snapped by Brewster on Friday.

Northeast 1B North

Cusick 51, Columbia 28: Lauren Nelson scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Panthers (3-0, 2-0) took control early and eased past the visiting Lions (1-2, 0-1). Malene Andrews added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Cusick. Columbia was led by Elizabeth Larrew’s 13 points.

Inchelium 47, Selkirk 42: Mariah Zacherley scored 20 points and the Hornets (1-2, 1-1) rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the host Rangers (2-1, 1-1). Inchelium trailed by 13 points after three quarters, but outscored Selkirk 22-4 in the fourth. Olivia Williams added 11 points for the Hornets. The Rangers were led by Katie Couch’s 21 points.

Republic 62, Northport 28: Demi Jo Vaughn had 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Tigers (4-0, 1-0) past the visiting Mustangs (2-3, 0-2). Brianna Brown added 16 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Republic, which outscored Northport 23-2 in the third to put the game out of reach. Marissa Gilmore led Northport with 11 points.

Southeast 1B

Liberty Christian 47, LaCrosse-Washtucna 21: Sarah Croskey scored 17 points and Amber Schmidt added 15 as the Patriots (1-0, 1-0) defeated the host Tigercats (0-3, 0-2). Ashtyn Aune scored nine points for LaCrosse-Washtucna, which fell behind by 16 in the first half.

St. John-Endicott 58, Garfield-Palouse 19: Devan Bafus scored 21 points and Gretchen Van Lith added 16 as the Eagles (2-1, 2-0) routed the host Vikings (0-5, 0-1).

Colton 81, Touchet 24: Jenna Moser scored 17 points and Savannah Chadwick added 10 as the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0) overwhelmed the host Indians (0-2, 0-2).

Colfax 57, Lakeside 48: A day after a disappointing loss to St. George’s, the defending state 2B champion Colfax Bulldogs got back on track. Brandon Gfeller made 7 of 12 3-pointers and finished with 32 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists as Colfax beat Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 57-48 in a nonleague game Saturday at Colfax . Gfeller scored 14 points in the decisive third quarter. The Bulldogs (3-2) outscored the Eagles 18-7 in the third and led by 14 heading into the fourth. Connor Moffat scored 17 points and Coleton Collins 13 for Lakeside (1-2).

St. George’s 64, Wellpinit 52: Eric Muelheims had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Will Tender added 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals as the Dragons (5-0) took control late and beat the host Redskins (2-1). Dexter Sienko added 11 points and 11 rebounds for St. George’s.

Wilbur-Creston 51, Waterville 48: Nick Densley scored a career-high 14 points and Colton Magers added 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Wildcats (2-2) beat visiting Waterville. Garet Townsend added 11 points for Wilbur-Creston.

Davenport 60, Odessa-Harrington 52: Shane Hopkins scored 16 points and Josh Likkel and Conner VanPevenage added 14 apiece as the Gorillas (5-0) topped the visiting Tigers (3-1). Davenport made nine 3-pointers, including six in the second half.

Brewster 55, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 42: Easton Driesson scored 18 points and the Bears beat the host Warriors (3-2). Thunder Wellhausen and Mitch Hunt scored 10 points apiece for ACH.

Pateros 49, Columbia Basin Secondary School 31: Pateros got off to an early start and carried the first quarter momentum into a 32-12 halftime lead. From there, it was able to hold on and coast to a win.

Northeast 2B

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 65, Reardan 37: Dylan Hartz scored 18 points and the Broncos (2-0, 1-0) raced past the host Indians (1-4, 0-1).

Northeast 1B North

Republic 62, Northport 48: Aaron Fritts led three players in double figures with 12 points and the Tigers (3-1, 1-0) topped the visiting Mustangs (2-3, 0-2). Saxon Brown added 11 points and Prestin Hooper chipped in 10 for Republic. Jeremiah Johnson and Dutch Burke scored 13 points apiece for Northport.

Cusick 74, Columbia 20: Sophomore Jes Brazda had 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench as the Panthers (3-0, 2-0) dumped the visiting Lions (0-3, 0-1). Tyson Shanholtzer added 12 points for Cusick.

Selkirk 64, Inchelium 32: Avery Miller scored 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Rangers (3-1, 2-0) past the visiting Hornets (0-3, 0-2). Dominic Cain added 15 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals for Selkirk.

Southeast 1B

LaCrosse-Washtucna 58, Liberty Christian 28: Jed Zimmer scored 19 points and Darcy Stamper added 17 – 10 coming in the Tigercats’ dominating first quarter – and LaCrosse-Washtucna (3-0, 2-0) routed the visiting Patriots (0-1, 0-1).

Garfield-Palouse 79, St. John-Endicott 57: Matt Holbrook scored 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting and the Vikings (4-1, 1-0) beat the visiting Eagles (0-3, 0-2). Freshman point guard Jesse Lopez added 13 points and five rebounds for Garfield-Palouse. The Vikings caught fire in the second half. They made all 11 of their shots from the field in the fourth quarter.

Colton 57, Touchet 48: Jake Straughan and Dalton Patchen scored 21 points apiece as the Wildcats (1-1, 1-0) beat the host Indians (0-2, 0-2). Edgar Rincon scored 15 points for the Indians.
