That time we nuked Mississippi
In 1963 and 1964,  at the height of the Cold War, tensions were high between the United States and the Soviet Union, as both nations stockpiled tens of thousands of nuclear devices. Both countries had signed a treaty to stop testing nuclear devices on the surface or underwater, but the treaty did not cover underground tests. Scientists didn't know if underground tests could reliably be detected by seismographs, so they did the only thing they could to find out: they detonated two nuclear devices deep underground in Mississippi.

Moon walking: Ex-Nasa astronauts describe lunar experience
The last US mission to the Moon, Apollo 17, blasted off shortly before midnight on 7 December 1972. Its crew spent three days on the lunar surface, collecting samples and conducting experiments. While China has said it aims to land astronauts on the Moon by the 2030s, in the decades since the Apollo 17 mission no human has returned to walk on the Moon. The death on Saturday of former US astronaut Alan Bean means there are now just four men alive who can describe what it is like to set foot on the Moon's surface

Econ 101: Why Teaching the Fundamentals Is So Important
The problem is not that politicians and pundits don't understand advanced economics, but that they don't understand even basic economics.

Tariffs Hurt Trump's Supporters Especially
resident Trump has been sending mixed signals about his trade strategy. In the morning hours of May 21, Trump tweeted that he would reduce his new trade barriers against China, but his Administration insists tariffs will remain and be a bargaining chip in international negotiations. Unfortunately for Americans, we are also victims of Trump’s so-called trade war. Toying with trade barriers puts significance sectors of the American economy and workforce at risk, especially among those who trusted Trump the most. If the president wishes to win a victory for the American people, he should repeal his new tariffs immediately.

Austrian Economics Is Essential to Understand Booms, Busts, and Money Itself
The boom-and-bust business cycle is not a natural result of free-market capitalism, but rather of government intervention.

People Are Less Selfish Under Capitalism
The evolution of capitalism has been in the direction of more trust and transparency, and less self-serving behavior; not coincidentally, this evolution has brought with it greater productivity and economic growth. That evolution, of course, has not taken place because capitalists are naturally good people. Instead, it's taken place because the benefits of trust—that is, of being trusting and of being trustworthy—are potentially immense and because a successful market system teaches people to recognize those benefits.

The Top Secret Scandal Behind the Kremlin’s MH17 Massacre
"... [O]ur Intelligence Community has known the full, terrible story of the MH17 shootdown from practically the moment it happened. Thanks to American acumen in SIGINT and satellite imagery, spies in Washington within mere days of the disaster knew who did it—and how the nightmare unfolded. As reported by The Washington Post only five days after the crash, American intelligence knew that the Kremlin was lying about its innocence in this sordid affair. The Obama White House authorized a limited release of intelligence information, based on “sensors that traced the path of the missile, shrapnel markings on the downed aircraft, voiceprint analysis of separatists claiming credit for the strike, and a flood of photos and other data from social-media sites” as the Post put it, to rebut Kremlin disinformation about the incident.”
