Full Text: Obama Details Plan to Create 'Thriving Middle Class'
In a major speech on the economy today, President Obama said, "If you ask some of these [Republicans] mostly in the House about their economic agenda, how it is that they'll strengthen the middle class, they'll shift the topic to “out-of-control” government spending – despite the fact that we've cut the deficit by nearly half as a share of the economy since I took office."

ISRAEL TO START SUPPLYING EU WITH INTEL ON HEZBOLLAH
Now that the EU has decided to designate Hezbollah’s military wing a terrorist organization, Israel will begin providing EU law enforcement officials with intelligence material so they can enforce the decision, Israeli diplomatic officials said Tuesday. Law enforcement authorities, homeland security officials and intelligence agencies in the EU’s 28 countries will need a plethora of information to make sure that Hezbollah’s military wing does not continue to operate on the continent, the officials added.

Student loan deal passes Senate
The Senate on Wednesday approved a bipartisan deal that ensures lower interest rates on loans for students heading to college this fall. Senators voted 81 to 18 to lower interest rates for undergraduates taking out government loans this school year to 3.86% -- cheaper than the 6.8% interest rate that kicked in on July 1. The new rates would be retroactive and apply to loans taken out after July 1. However, the bill has provisions for rates to go higher in coming years. It is expected to become law, with support from the White House and the House of Representatives, which will likely take up the bill in coming days.

Forty years ago, thousands of Mexican-Americans in Dallas, Texas came together for a protest at city hall. Four days earlier, a white police officer had shot and killed 12-year-old Santos Rodriguez. The death of Rodriguez sparked a riot. Eventually, it later spurred change that led to political representation and more Mexican-Americans on the police force.

NSA vote splits parties, jars leaders
A $512.5 billion Pentagon appropriations bill cleared the House Wednesday evening after the leadership narrowly beat back efforts to curb the National Security Agency’s authority to collect private call records and metadata on telephone customers in the U.S.

Scenes from a marriage
New York City Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner unleashed his typical torrent of verbiage on Tuesday — but words couldn’t compete with the excruciating image of his embarrassed wife squirming in the spotlight both have sought. In the most cringe-worthy moment of a four-month political comeback yarn that has tested Gotham’s gag reflex, Huma Abedin, the dignified wife of a serially disgraced Democrat, nervously defended her husband at a Tuesday press conference. Her effort came amid new disclosures Weiner had shared an online relationship, and anatomical snapshots, with yet another female admirer.

Senate passes student loan deal
A hard fought deal to keep student loan interest rates down cleared the Senate Wednesday on a 81-18 vote, despite strong opposition from liberal Democrats who believe it would make skyrocketing student debt even worse in the long run. The vote represented a significant breakthrough after months of stalemate and weeks of negotiations between the two parties to find a long-term solution on student loans. And it showcased a deep split among Democrats: Many were skeptical about tying students’ interest rates to market rates expected to rise in future years.

Feds rule in transgender student case
The U.S. Justice and Education departments said Wednesday that a transgender California student who is anatomically female but lives life as a male must be able to use school bathrooms, locker rooms and other facilities designed for boys. The first-of-its-kind decision from the agencies tasks the Arcadia school district outside Los Angeles to change district policies and practices to accommodate the rising ninth-grade student. Teachers and staff must be trained in how to prevent gender discrimination, and federal agencies will be keeping tabs on the district through at least 2016.

Why You Should Think Twice Before Shaming Anyone on Social Media
We despise racism and sexism because they bully the less powerful, but at what point do the shamers become the bullies? After all, the hallmark of bullying isn’t just being mean. It also involves a power differential: The bully is the one who’s punching down.
