Discriminatory Ruling Against Persecuted Chinese Christian by Immigration Judge Overturned
ICC Note: Chang, a Chinese Christian who fled to the United States to seek asylum for persecution, was imprisoned and beaten for not worshiping in a government controlled church. Once in the U.S., he faced immigration judge Barbara Nelson, who asked Chang to answer questions such as the year when the Apostle Paul converted to Christianity. Unable to answer, judge Nelson ruled that Chang could not prove he was a Christian and therefore did not deserve refugee status. Thankfully, this ruling was overturned by a court of appeals. Refugees of religious persecution often find it very challenging to be granted refugee status in the United States, allowing them to stay in the country permanently.
