DESCENDANTS OF COL. GEORGE ESKRIDGE, pt. 6

(Beginning with this generation, which are my great grandparents, all lines of descent will be included to the extent of my knowledge.  In future posts, I intend to give the progenitors of Minerva Aldridge and Mary Ellen Longacre.  Notes in small print are from the records.ancestry.com website.)

                                                          Generation No. 7

THOMAS BROWNFIELD SEATON (HIRAM PEGLEG, JAMES CARMICHAEL, FRANCIS, ELIZABETH "BETTY" KENNER, MARGARET ESKRIDGE, GEORGE) was born 19 Feb 1843 in Pennsylvania, and died 1920.  Burial: Wilbur Cemetery, Wilbur, Washington.  He married (1) MINERVA (SALLY) ALDRIDGE 3 Jul 1877.  She was born 19 Mar 1856 (alt:1855) in Pleasant Hill, Cass Co., Missouri (alt: Johnson County, Missouri), and died 7 Mar 1879 (alt. 28 Mar 1879) in Cass Co., Missouri.  Burried in Reed Cemetery, Cass Co., Missouri.  He married (2) MARY ELLEN LONGACRE 8 Feb 1880 in Cass Co., Missouri, daughter of JOHN LONGACRE and RUTH LONGACRE.  She was born 7 May 1851 in Cass County, Missouri, and died 22 Nov 1900 in Washington.
Born in Pennsylvania, USA on 19 Feb 1843 to Hiram Seaton and Mary Fisher. Thomas Brownfield married Mary Ellen Longacre and had 6 children. Thomas Brownfield married Minerva Aldridge and had a child.

Notes for THOMAS BROWNFIELD SEATON:
"Thomas Seaton, downriver from Keller, would refuse service to anyone who drank alcohol or differed with him politically; he simply told them to 'Go back to Keller for your crossing'," wrote Ruth Kirk and Carmela Alexander in their book "Exploring Washington's Past: A Road Guide to History."

Ferries on the Columbia have a long history.  In the early years of this century - before the Grand Coulee Dam drowned the stretch of river and created today's placid Franklin Roosevelt Lake in its place in the early 1940s - at least 16 little ferries operated on about a 50 mile stretch around the Keller route.

The ferries carried gold miners, white settlers and native Americans (from the sprawling Colville Indian Reservation which borders the Columbia's north shore) across the river.  Some early ferry operators were quirky individuals and laws unto themselves.

                                                          Generation No. 8

JOHN ELMER SEATON (THOMAS BROWNFIELD, HIRAM PEGLEG, JAMES CARMICHAEL, FRANCIS, ELIZABETH "BETTY" KENNER, MARGARET ESKRIDGE, GEORGE) was born 20 Jun 1888, and died 27 Jun 1933.  He married EUNICE (unknown).  Burial: Wilbur Cemetery, Wilbur, Washington.

Notes for EUNICE:

Eunice was for many years a very rigid 3rd grade teacher, but considered in later years by her former students as one of the best. She would often discipline her students by wrapping them on the knuckles with her ruler, or pulling their hair (told to Charles Seaton as a very young boy by his mother Rene). Charles' mother kept him from being Eunice's student for these reasons.

Children of JOHN SEATON and EUNICE are:
      i.  MARY SEATON, b. 1912.
ii.  FRANK SEATON, b. 25 Nov 1913, Soap Lake, Washington; d. 1974, Wenatchee, Washington.

  1. What an interesting amount of information. I am the grandson of Cora Seaton Rinker who, as you know, is the daughter of Tom and Minerva.
