HIRAM PEGLEG SEATON (JAMES CARMICHAEL, FRANCIS, ELIZABETH "BETTY" KENNER, MARGARET ESKRIDGE, GEORGE) was born 7 Oct 1800 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and died 28 Oct 1870 in Pleasant Hill, Cass, Missouri. He married (1) SARAH VOORHEES 4 Dec 1823. She was born about 1802. He married (2) MARY FISCHER about 1831 in Wharton Township, Pennsylvania. She was born 11 Oct 1797 in Romney, Virginia, and died 24 Aug 1883 in Sandy Creek, Missouri.
Notes for HIRAM PEGLEG SEATON:
He received a good education in Washington, Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
At age of eighteen he engaged in peddling goods, and continued at it for two years, when he purchased 600 acres of land in Wharton Township and engaged in farming.
Hiram and second wife Mary lived in Wharton Township on the Seaton Farm near Elliotsville, which joined Sumey's and Tuttle's farms. They also lived in Wharton Township in 1841. He was elected treasure of Fayette County on 10 Oct 1843 and on 14 Oct 1845 and was popular with the people. A special act of assembly was passed by the legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of re-electing him as treasurer for a second term, and after serving two terms as county treasurer, which was most acceptable to the people, he returned to his farm in Wharton Township. Later he was a toll keeper at Mt. Washington.
In 1689 they sold all they didn't want to take with them on the train and moved with the family to Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri, where Hiram died. Mary carried his pegleg around until she died. She wanted it buried with her but it was thrown out and burned. She lived at Sandy Creek until she died.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know why Hiram had a peg leg?
ReplyDeleteI have done some research on families in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and came across Hiram Seaton and found an article and added it to his Find a Grave memorial page. He owned a sawmill and perhaps by accident, lost one of his legs and for many years walked on a wooden stick. When he died, his wife carried around his leg, and wanted to be buried with it, but it was burned. I have also updated several family profiles on WikiTree.
