Military service: Captain of a Privateer, American Revolution

From "The Kenner Family" by Laura Davis Worley:

Captain James Markham was the Captain of a privateer in the American Revolution. His nephew Howsen Kenner, eldest son of his brother-in-law Francis Kenner, served as a midshipman under him.

They were captured by the British and kept in Dartmore Prison, where they were badly treated. The gold lace was torn from their uniforms, and they were nearly starved. They reportedly caught rats, tied them to a line, threw this bait out the window and caught dogs, which they drew in and ate.

They made their escape by bribing the negro keeper, got into a wherry, and put out to sea. They were captured by the French and taken to France. They were reportedly released by the influence of the Marquis De Layfayette and sent home to America.
