by Daniel Marshall: The Graveyard of the Pacific earned its name from the hundreds of ships that met a watery grave – stretching from around Tillamook Bay on the Oregon Coast all the way up to Cape Scott on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. On the south and west sides of the Island alone, there have been close to some 500 wrecks since the early days of European exploration, but it was one in particular – the ocean liner S.S. Valencia of 1906 – that saw 100 lives lost and was the impetus for building the Dominion Lifesaving Trail the following year. That trail became today’s West Coast Trail. The wreck of the Valencia is considered by some to have been the worst maritime disaster in the Graveyard of the Pacific.
