Man who stole $50 to be freed after 36 years in US jail
An Alabama judge has ordered that a man who robbed a bakery of $50.75 be released from his life sentence. Alvin Kennard, 58, was handed the harsh sentence under strict rules introduced in the 1970s to deter repeat offenders. In 1983, when he was 22 years old, Kennard robbed a bakery with a knife. Although there were no injuries, he was sentenced to life without parole. He had previously pleaded guilty to a burglary, meaning he had breached the old Habitual Felony Offender Act, otherwise known as the Three Strikes Law.

Islamist ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) rebels attacked the mostly Anglican town of Boga in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the early morning hours of August 23. According to a report by the Anglican Bishop of Boga, William Bahemuka, the raid lasted for about three hours, and more than 200 youth, children and women were abducted. The Anglican Mission Hospital there was also looted, and a doctor and lab technician were captured by the rebels. A small unit of government troops based in the city ineffectively resisted the raiders. Numerous shops were looted and cows were stolen, but no casualties were reported.

16,000-Year-Old Stone Artifacts Unearthed in Idaho
Archaeologists have uncovered almost two hundred stone artifacts, including projectile points and flake tools, and bone fragments from large mammals at the Cooper’s Ferry site in western Idaho, the United States. The discovery suggests that humans lived in the area 16,000 years ago, more than a thousand years earlier than scientists previously thought. They therefore arrived in the Americas before an inland ice-free corridor had opened. The projectile points from the site closely resemble those found in Japan, supporting the hypothesis of a Pacific coastal route.
