The Problem with the Census
The Census Bureau has long known more about my family history than my family does. For instance, it was through old census forms that I discovered my grandmother changed her name from "Paula" to "Pauline" at some time after 1930. This was news even to her children. The 1930 census form also reported her place of birth — Mexico — and her native language — Spanish. Her occupation is listed as "cashier." But the nosiness doesn't stop there. Completed forms from both 1920 and 1930 show the census taker apparently prodded the family for information on all household members' names, their citizenship status, year of immigration, and ability to read and write. In 1930, the census taker would have been instructed to to ask if the householder rented the family home, the householder's salary, and "marital condition."

Kenya’s Fishing Crisis Reminds Us of the Benefits of Free Trade
On March 21, 2019, the BBC ran a story titled “Chinese imports ‘driving fishermen to despair.’” Although the title might lead one to think the article is another installment on the US-China trade war, it is instead a piece on the relationship between China and Kenya. The situation covered by the BBC is a highlight of the intersection of environmental concerns, economics, population dynamics, and social reactions.

The Arbitrary Line Between Legal Bribery and Illegal Bribery
In an election year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is suddenly neck deep in a corruption scandal that could cost him his job. The scandal stems from “ongoing fraud and corruption charges” against SNC-Lavalin (SNC), a large international engineering and construction firm based in Montreal. The charges are “linked to alleged dealings with the Moammar Gadhafi regime in Libya between 2001 and 2011.” The corruption scandal that now plagues Justin Trudeau goes back to the rather questionable notion that the Canadian government ought to regulate contracts in foreign countries, while also setting an arbitrary distinction between legal and illegal bribery.
