If Corey Booker Is Serious about Reparations, Here Are Two Better Places to Start
The impetus behind reparations is not justice but the inculcation of national guilt for the purpose of furthering a political agenda.

How Net Neutrality Limits Entrepreneurs
Information flows through the internet as cars flow through roads and highways. As a private road owner would be able to regulate traffic on his road, a private ISP, in the context of a free market, would be able to regulate internet traffic. Like physical roads, the logistics of the internet work in such a way that traffic congestion can become a problem.

When Dissidents Become Enemies of the State: From Jesus Christ to Julian Assange
The trailblazers in human, academic, scientific, and religious freedom have always been nonconformists. In the current governmental climate, where laws that run counter to the dictates of the Constitution are made in secret, passed without debate, and upheld by secret courts that operate behind closed doors, obeying one’s conscience and speaking truth to the power of the police state can render you an “enemy of the state.”

Given the loose standards and high default rates that plague the student loan machine, the federal government might as well just be handing out credit cards so everyone can buy more stuff with subsidized loans.

Canada’s federal government wants cigarettes to self-extinguish when we stop smoking them, believing this will reduce incidents of death and injury from fires caused by careless smoking. Thus, since 2005 the government has mandated the use of reduced ignition propensity (RIP) materials in the manufacture of all cigarettes. However, the government’s high cigarette taxes prompt many smokers to buy non-RIP contraband cigarettes, which, as it turns out, may actually be the safer product. It turns out government taxes and regulation have NOT been responsible for declines in smoking. At the same time, government approved cigarettes may be more dangerous than black market cigarettes.

Prices are set by how much people value goods and services. And people value things based on what they think will improve their life and well-being.

Living in the silence of Holy Saturday
Today is a day when we do nothing. For those whose tradition takes them through a detailed re-enactment of the events of Passion Week, the seven days set out in the gospels (especially Mark), this day is striking in its stillness. In Catholic tradition, nothing can be celebrated, the only exception being in the case of the ministry at the moment of death.

Thank God for western values
The debt of the West to Christianity is more deeply rooted than many might presume. Declarations of hope that Notre Dame can be resurrected have been much in evidence this Holy Week. Such is the lesson of Easter: that life can come from death. Unlike the Eiffel Tower, that other great emblem of Paris, Notre Dame provides the French with evidence that their modern and secular republic has its foundations deeply rooted in the Middle Ages. Notre Dame has always been more than just an assemblage of stone and stained glass. It is a monument as well to a specifically Christian past.

Sue Lani Madsen: Pre-planning by fire departments makes the difference between a chance to rebuild and total loss
Everything went according to plan at the Cathedral of Notre Dame last week. Except for the part where a fire broke out. It was a good day for the Paris Fire Brigade, though. They can count the cathedral as a save. While the flames and firefight were spectacular if heartbreaking to watch, pre-fire planning was key to saving much of the building. The Paris Fire Brigade had trained for this catastrophe. There was a plan for rescuing artifacts, a plan for bringing in fireboats on the River Seine for an inexhaustible water supply and a plan for using a high-tech robot and drones to augment hundreds of human firefighters. Pre-fire planning is also a key piece of public safety strategy in Spokane County, Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer confirmed on Friday. Pre-plans are shared between jurisdictions and available on mobile devices.
