IDAHO SILVER MINES' FIERCE MERGER WAR
''It's sad,'' said Ben Harrison, a broker on the Spokane, Wash., Stock Exchange, with a shake of his head. ''People who used to be friends go to lunch at Jameson's, and now they just glare at each other.'' The tense atmosphere in this mining district, known as the Coeur d'Alene, is a result of two fierce merger fights that have embroiled seven companies, including the Sunshine Mining Company and the Hecla Mining Company, two of the nation's largest silver producers. At stake in the various merger proposals is control by these two concerns of approximately 20 percent of the nation's silver production. The ''silver war'' as analysts call it, was touched off by the desire of Sunshine and Hecla to tighten their grip on a valley that produces about 15 million ounces of silver a year. That is nearly half of all newly mined silver in the United States.
