Increasing Worker Satisfaction Shouldn't Be an Unfair Labor Practice
Making your voice heard in the workplace could be more difficult than you think. Companies should be permitted to establish a system so they can receive feedback from employees and remedy worker dissatisfaction. Unfortunately, national labor law generally prohibits an employer from carrying out this practice. Labor law restrains employers from starting an employee organization the sole purpose of which is to constructively work with employees on improving work conditions and productivity.

Seattle’s car megatunnel is here. Can the city still lead on climate?
With Bertha completing its long-delayed, expensive trip under Seattle, much of the focus understandably goes to cost and traffic concerns. What often doesn’t make the list of issues is climate change, which says a lot about the state of politics in Washington state.

In a Little Town Named Pendleton
Since sometime in early August, a group of people in Pendleton, Oregon have been demonstrating on Main Street or in front of the Round-Up grounds. The numbers of the people have ranged from 10- over 60. They carry signs and chant in all weather. This is a lot to say for a town of only 17,000 where Republicans rule in both votes and money. "We are water protectors and we have come to the realization that our water, not just here or in Flint or Standing Rock, but all over the world, is in danger."

Kicking Out the Coders Is Not a Good Way to Reform Immigration
US immigration policy has long accommodated this demand through a program called the H1-B, which pertains to skilled workers. Even for the many critics of immigration, this program should pass muster. These people are not security risks. They aren’t going on welfare. They have the strongest possible incentive to acculturate, obey the law, and contribute mightily to American enterprise. Restrictions on immigration ultimately give more power to the state to oppress its own citizens -- especially citizens who would hire immigrants.

Ailing US Military Needs More Than a Continuing Resolution
Congress is proposing a stopgap spending measure for the military. What's needed is a spending boost.

Kansas Almost Voted to Expand Medicaid. What Other States Should Learn From This Near-Mistake.
States are mistaken if they think they can cut their own health spending costs by expanding Medicaid.

Export-Import Bank’s Secret Dealings Demonstrate the Problem With Crony Capitalism
Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, some members of Congress believe that a few legislative tweaks will remedy all that is wrong with the bank. There isn’t an economist alive who could coherently argue that Ex-Im subsidies don’t distort credit and labor markets.

The centennial of the U.S. entering World War I this April 6 also marks the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine. One hundred years later, trench warfare isn’t a thing of the past in Europe; and Russia’s military aggression has dimmed the prospects for long-term peace on the Continent.

Trump Affirms Human Rights, Ends US Funding for UN Population Fund
According to the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, which has been regularly attached to foreign appropriations bills since 1985, the president has the authority to withhold federal funding from any organization that “supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization." On April 3, a State Department memo announced that the U.S. will do just that. The U.N. Population Fund has long supported China's unethical practices of coercive abortion and forced sterilization. It is tragic and unacceptable that the Chinese government continues to trample the rights of its citizens through coercive family planning programs while partnering with the UNFPA.

Most Americans don’t expect the federal government to stay out of their lives altogether. What they expect is minimal involvement: Let Washington be the last resort, the one Americans turn to only when they truly can’t devise any alternative. Self-reliance characterized the first settlers in this country, and the U.S. Constitution exemplified that spirit by creating a federal government of separate and limited powers — one strong enough to represent a new nation to the world, but weak enough to allow states and individuals to thrive.

U.S. industries that depend heavily on copyright—which protects books, movies, films, photos, music, as well as software from unauthorized reproduction by third parties—are an important key to American economic growth and innovation. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of our copyright system is clouded by serious problems at the U.S. government agency that registers copyrights—the Copyright Office, an appendage of the Library of Congress. As reported last August in The Daily Signal, the Copyright Office is outdated and so lacking in personnel, funds, and technology that it is ill-equipped to carry out its mission of protecting intellectual property.

Contrary to the left's popular narrative, big government is not a friend of the poor. Advocates for big government often equate expanding government with concern for the poor. But reality speaks to the contrary: Expanding government often has very harmful effects on the poor. There are numerous policies that create artificial and unnecessary obstacles for the poor when it comes to obtaining jobs or starting businesses that could lift them out of poverty.

Muslim Imam Says His Whole Religion Needs a Rethinking
An Australian Shiite imam, Mohammad Tawhidi, delivered this speech to a Rotary Club, and boy does he tackle a lot of the issues that face his religion. He says his father left a Muslim-run country to seek freedom of religion and freedom of expression in a Western nation, and he doesn't want Australia to start looking like the place his family fled. He says Israel is Jewish land, and that Muslims don't have the historic right to it. He also expressed his concern that one of the Muslim religious texts suggests terrorism, and called Islamic terrorists the "filth" in his religion.
