Update: China Arrested Church Leaders Before Demolishing Sanjiang Church
ICC Note: More information is pouring in from Christians in China who were part of the effort to stop the Chinese government from demolishing the 4,000 seat Sanjiang Church on Monday. The church was completely destroyed with explosives only a few weeks after a human shield made up of thousands of Christians had initially caused the government to reach a compromise with church leaders. Now, Christians are reporting that Chinese authorities managed to clear out hundreds of protesters before the demolition by arresting leaders of the protest first, while subjecting their families to various forms of official scrutiny. Employing such high pressure tactics is not uncommon for Chinese government officials attempting to silence outspoken Christian leaders.

Boko Haram Suspected Responsible for 19 Dead, 80 Injured in Second Abuja Bombing
ICC Note: A second bomb rocked the outskirts of Nigeria's capital city of Abuja last night, killing 19 and injuring more than 80. Suspected to be the work of radical Islamic insurgency and U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Boko Haram, the group set off a bomb in the Nyanya bus terminal, just 50 meters from the site of yesterday's explosion, on April 14th. That first attack, targeting Christian worshipers traveling to be with friends and family for the Easter Passion Week, draws into question the motives for the most recent bombing. While many point to the upcoming World Economic Forum for Africa set to take place in Abuja next week, rights groups familiar with Boko Haram question whether a deeper, religious motive spurred the group’s most recent attack.

Buddhist Nationalism Rising in Asia
ICC Note: In several Buddhist majority countries, a form of Buddhist nationalism is taking hold of the Buddhist majority population. In Sri Lanka, Buddhist nationalist have formed a group called BBS which attacks both Christians and Muslims in an attempt to protect the Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka. For many people in the West, Buddhist nationalism is something foreign and unfamiliar. For Christians in some parts of Asia, it is the newest threat to their existence.

U.S. Discusses Support for Nigerian Government in its Search for 230 Kidnapped School Girls
ICC Note: U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Marie Harf stated Thursday that the U.S. has "been engaged with the Nigerian government in discussions on what we might do to help support their efforts to find and free these young women." On April 14th, over 100 suspected Boko Haram militants abducted more than 240 school girls from their secondary school in the predominantly Christian town of Chibok, located in Northern Nigeria's ravaged Borno State. Protests erupted throughout Nigeria, demanding the Nigerian government find and release the more than 230 captive girls who are reportedly being sold into forced marriages with their captors before being ferried to Boko Haram strongholds in Chad and Cameroon.

Pakistani Christians in UK Hold Protest Against Blasphemy Laws
ICC Note: During a meeting between UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistani Christian in the UK held a protest outside of the Prime Minister's residence to highlight the abuse of blasphemy laws in Pakistan. Cameron had promised the UK Parliament that he would discuss the abuse of Pakistan's blasphemy laws, especially how they are used to specifically target Christians. Please pray that this meeting and protest will bring about change in Pakistan.

Brunei Adopts Sharia Law, Christians May Face Harsh Punishments
ICC Note: On Wednesday, the small sultanate of Brunei became the first nation in Southeast Asia to officially adopt Sharia (Islamic) law country-wide. The courts will now begin to enforce a range of punishments for various crimes under Islamic law and over the next few years will phase in additional crimes, including insulting the Prophet Muhammad, which will be punishable by death. With an estimated 40,000 Christians living in Brunei, the possibility for these laws to turn into religious persecution is very real.

Five Ministers Arrested and Detained by Eritrean Officials Before Officially Ordained
ICC Note: Petros Yosief, Bemnet Tesfay, Aklilu Tesfay, Ermias Hadgu and Aron Mehretu, five pastors set to be ordained as official ministers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, have been arrested by security officials in Asmara, Eritrea. Reports estimate more than 1,500 Christians remain imprisoned throughout Eritrea for the expression of their faith. Often referred to as the "North Korea of Africa" and the "Great Prison," Eritrea has, under President Isaias Afwerki's authoritarian administration, adopted a top-down policy of religious repression, arresting and detaining Christians afilliated with unregistered house churches and Bible studies and dictating to the fourregistered religious sects how, where, and when they may practice their religion.

Since this time, more than 300 persons have developed an infection, of whom about a third died. The fact that the Arabian camel is the origin of the infectious disease has been confirmed recently.
