Asteroid Trio Gives Earth a Close Shave
Asteroid impacts on Earth are infrequent, particularly large ones that cause great damage. Yet near misses are a dime a dozen. According to NASA, about 20 known asteroids approach each year within 239,000 miles of Earth—or closer than the average distance from us to the moon. Two such flybys occurred yesterday and one will occur today, passing roughly 217,000 miles, 105,000 miles and 38,500 miles away, respectively.

Pastor Murdered, Churches Demolished in Southern India
According to new reports, incidents of anti-Christian violence in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh nearly doubled from 2012 to 2013. The violence includes murders, beatings, and destruction of Christian property, usually at the hands of radical nationalist Hindu groups. Christians across India are concerned about the upcoming national elections and the possibility that the the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win the elections, making Narendra Modi India's next prime minister. Attacks on religious minorities across India are often conducted by groups linked to the BJP or it's more radical offshoots.

Australian Missionary Freed from North Korea Describes ‘grueling’ Ordeal
John Short, the 75-year-old Australian missionary detained in North Korea for nearly two weeks last month, has released a brief statement describing his captivity at the hands of the North Korean authorities. In his statement, John says he was subjected to four hour long interrogations every day for 13 days. The missionary was also confined to his room and kept under 24-hour guard. Short was also told that he faced up to 15 years in prison for his "crime" of handing out Christian literature in public. Kenneth Bae, an American missionary, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in May of last year after being detained in 2012.

16 Christians Murdered by Islamic Gunmen in Nigeria
Northeast Nigeria has in recent weeks become a killing field for Islamic radicals connected with the "Boko Haram" movement. In the last few months hundreds have been killed, with Christian communities often bearing the brunt of attacks. On Monday and Tuesday of this week gunmen assaulted five different villages, killing sixteen Christians, most of whom were women and children. Nigerian government forces were either not present or refused to engage the militants. Thousands have been killed and tens of thousands have fled Nigeria's north as the Islamic militant group targets police stations, churches, schools, and Christian homes.

North Korea: Dozens Face Execution for Meeting with Missionary
South Korean news agencies are reporting that as many as thirty-three North Koreans may soon be executed for coming into contact with Kim Jung-wook, a Baptist missionary from South Korea who was arrested in the North back in October. Kim Jung-wook last week "confessed" to North Korean media sources that he was a spy working for the South. The South Korean intelligence community has flatly denied this, saying that Kim's work was purely religious in nature. Christianity is completely repressed in North Korea, with as many as 50,000 North Koreans serving time in political prison camps were torture, execution, and starvation occur on a daily basis.

German Home-Schooling Family Will be Allowed to Stay in US
ICC Note: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has signaled it will allow the Romeike family to stay in the U.S. only days after the Supreme Court rejected to hear their case for asylum. The family fled German several years ago when faced with legal challenges for attempting to home-school their children according to their Christian belief system. Home-schooling in Germany has been illegal since legislation created under the Nazi regime mandated that all German children attend public schools. The announcement by DHS comes as a relief to rights groups and the Romeike family, who faced heavy fines and the loss of their children if they were forced to return to Germany. The Obama administration had previously argued that their case did not qualify as one of religious persecution.

Second Genocide for the Middle East Christians in Less Than a Century
In the midst of the conflict that has plagued the Middle East in the last decade it has been the minorities who suffer the most and also do not benefit from any protections. The situation is even worse for Christians who because of their faith are not considered as “full citizens” even in their homeland. These realities have forced many to leave, not primarily because of economic hardships, though that exists, but because of the threat to their very lives.

Orthodox Seminary in Turkey Awaiting Reopening
“If the decision is taken today, tomorrow I am ready to host the first class,” said the Archbishop of a Turkish seminary that has been closed for more than 40 years. The Theological School of Halki has been a victim of the internal politics of Turkey, as well as its foreign relations with neighboring Greece. Without a school to train future clergy the Orthodox Christian community is struggling to replace its aging leadership.
