from The Wenatchee World:

This ferry, near the mouth of the Colockum below Rock Island Dam, was used by miners heading for the Okanogan country and operated by a man named Layfield.  It was later taken over by the Jensen brothers and still later by the Moettler brothers.  They ran it until the road was opened past Rock Island Dam in 1922 or 1923.

Apartment fire claims woman’s life

Dee Riggs      World staff writer

SOAP LAKE — A woman died in a Soap Lake apartment fire that was reported at 6:21 a.m. Wednesday.

Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison declined to release the name of the woman because next of kin had not been notified. He expected to do an autopsy today.

The fire burned a four-plex at 318 Sixth Ave. Mayor Raymond Gravelle said at least three fourths of the complex was destroyed. The roof caved in over two of the units.

Gravelle said a man living in the apartment where the fire started was able to alert people with children who were living in one of the apartments but was not able to reach the apartment where the woman died. “It was already fully engulfed in flames,” Gravelle said.

Fighting the fire were crews from Soap Lake’s volunteer department, the Ephrata Fire Department and crews from Grant County fire districts 7 and 13.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
