A Look Back in the News . . . . . . . . compiled by Dorothy Graff

     50 years ago in history -- The weather was windy and chilly for the first day of the local participation in the annual Spokesman Review Telephonic Trapshoot according to Ralph Jorgensen, governor of the shoot.  The Coulee City-Almira contingent ended the day with a score of 97.  Twenty-seven shooters participated with Ralph Jorgensen and I. B. Cook of Almira breaking 25 birds each.  Other scores were Ed Douglas, Almira, 24; Lyle Hosier, 23; Paul Neihart, 23 and Ross Nelson 23.
      The annual meeting of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church was held January 8.  Reports were received for the session and pastor, the Sunday school secretary and treasurer, the women's association, United Presbyterian Youth, and the trustees of the church.  Mr. Tony Talbert (?) and Mr. Tom Davis were elected to 3-year terms as elders, and Mr. George Hartman and Mr. Alfred Mickelsen were elected to new 3-year terms on the board of trustees.  The congregation has a current membership of 134 and a Sunday school enrollment of 154.  A budget of $9,135 was adopted for 1961.
      Jim Jess was named local chairman for the New March of Dimes and coin boxes were placed in restaurants and stores for donations.  Mrs. Jerry Allen was the only volunteer (so far) of the 5 or 6 needed to conduct the "Mothers March" on Jan. 31.  The Girls Pep Club at the high school collected $20.40 at the ball game Saturday night and Jim Jess extended his thanks to their cooperation and also  thanked Myron Weitz, superintendent and Les Lillquist, principal, for their efforts.  The Women's Club planned to hold a "coffee hour" at Tom Twining's office on Jan. 28 fro 1 to 4 pm.  The ladies will serve pie, cookies and cake and all proceeds will go to the March of Dimes.
      Mr. & Mrs. Bob Olin are the parents of a boy born Tues. morn at McKay's Hospital in Soap Lake.  He was named Roger William.  The paternal grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Perry Olin.
      Mr. Henry Taschereau received word of the death of his mother Tuesday morning.  His mother resided in Spokane and suffered a heart attack Saturday and Taschereau went to Spokane to see her Sunday.

      Dave Goodwin recieved a call the evening of January 9th that his brother Merlin, "Buddy," had just died.  He was 81 years old.  Dave and Patti will be going to California later, for his memorial.

Obituary

      Miles C. Adkins, a lifelong resident of Coulee City, passed away January 6, 2011 at hishome.  He was 82 years old.  Miles was born August 28, 1928 to John and Sarah (Hlliday) Adkins in Coulee City, Washington.
      Miles graduated from Coulee City High School in 1946.  He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army.  He received a Bachelor Degree in Agriculture and was self-employed
as a farmer.
      Miles also was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Adkins enjoyed watching football, playing bridge and talking politics.
      Miles was a great supporter of the youth of the area and enjoyed the interaction with them.  Year after year Mr. Adkins would very generously try to pay the stdents of the ACH Warrior Club for raking his leaves each fall even though the club would not accept his donation.  He was always grateful for their help.
     Miles is survived by his sister Linda R. Chrisman and niece Tama Torbenson, both of Spokane Valley, Washington.
      Services for Miles will be held today, January 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Coulee City Presbyterian Church.
      In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Coulee City Ambulance or Shriners Hospital.  Arrangements are under the care of Nicoles Funeral Home of Ephrata.
      Miles' kind spirit will be missed in the Coulee community by the many friends and neighbors he leaves behind.
