1 July:
Wonderful day connecting with Coulee City-ites and alumni. Enjoyed Clifford Bresee's message on Isaiah 1. Special treat to hear Joe Olin's organ and piano playing at the Presbyterian Church, where I grew up. Nearly 45 years ago, Joe played the organ at our wedding.  Richard Evans was the only one from '67. The class of '68 had a get together the night before, so that's how Joe, Loreen (Cox), Carol (Edgeomon) and Kathy (Davis) out numbered us at church. I sat with Rita Kane though and Mike is from the class of '67. Good time...  - Coleen Long

I thought this would be a good day to post this copy of a letter I have:

USS Great Northern
Aug 19-(19)18

Miss Lizzie Ligault

Dear Friend. Rec. your letter while in New York the last time but just couldn't ans it. We didn't stay but 3 days and I had to work all the time. So I thought I would write today as we might be as busy this time. We left France last Tuesday and expect to get to New York tomorrow eve. This leaves me well except a bad cold. We had a good trip this time especially coming back. Well, Lizzie I suppose everybody there is well and harvesting now. I hope you had a good crop this year. Well I am glad my heifer has a calf. I think she will be a good cow. Has the boys ever got my colt from the Moses Coulee yet? That was bad about your girls losing their husbands.

Well Lizzie I don't think the war will last over another year if it last that that long. The American boys are showing them how to fight. They are giving them fits now. I hope it will soon over any way even if I have to serve my four years. It might be possible that this ship might come to the pacific coast this winter for she is built for the pacific ocean and I dont think they will run her in the Atlantic sea this winter for she might break in two, ha ha. If she should come over there I hope I am still on her for I could get a furlow and come home. I would like to see everybody but then I dont have any idea when I will get the chance. Well the mess cooks are setting the tables now so have to close, hoping to hear from you soon and that we reach New York tomorrow eve so I can mail this letter. So give my regards to everybody.

Your friend in U. S. N.

Harold Evans identified the writer as "Uncle Bob" (Willis).

Comment by Dan Bolyard:

Interesting. The USS Great Northern was built for the jointly owned Great Northern Pacific Steamship Co. It was a joint venture by James J. Hill for his two railroads, the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific to stimulate trade with the Orient. There were only two boats owned by the company, the above named Great Northern and also the Northern Pacific. This makes it a nice tie in to Coulee City in itself, being an NP town.

Comment by John Joplin:

I though it was interesting the writer expected the ship to go to the pacific which it eventually did. I think I read it carried about 28,000 troops in numerous trips across the Atlantic in the Great War. I am thankful Harold was able to identify the author.

Same shot in Douglas County - this picture is a little amazing to me - taken with telephoto and from a higher elevation - when we lived there we had no sense of the mountains looming out west - just the wheat fields surrounding us - My folks homeplace where I was raised to the left, with the (relocated Mt. View schoolhouse still standing) and the first place that Janice and I built in the 70's to the lower right. I think the telephoto must do strange things, how could we have missed those mountains?

  1. Hello, I am looking for a Joe Olin who also player the piano and organ. We worked together for the airlines in the early 1970's. I have lost track of Joe and would love to find him again. I'm wondering if this Joe Olin might be the man that I knew.
