The Southern Slave Economy Was Anti-Capitalistic
The discussion around the political economy of slavery has been one of the central debates in the academic study of the Peculiar Institution in the Antebellum South. Traditionally, the Southern economy was considered non-capitalistic and pre-bourgeoise; a pre-industrialized economy that struggled to thrive due to the lack of incentives imposed by slave labor, the absence of a legal framework that stimulated the emergence of capitalism and a backward, agriculture-based economy. Some economists have suggested that the Southern economy was mostly capitalistic despite being largely based on slave labor. To what extent are these conclusions accurate ? Was capitalism the main cause of the economic, political, and social backwardness in the Antebellum South?

The EU's Chief Brexit Negotiator Is an Anti-Anglophone
When the European Union Commission needed to appoint a negotiator for its talks with the United Kingdom, the task was of essential importance. This person needed to be a distinguished diplomat, a careful communicator in the media, and a connoisseur of the intricacy of the relationship between the British Isles and the continent. The toxic political environment surrounding Brexit deserves an open-minded and calm voice to represent the 27 remaining voices of the European Union, which all have individual interests in remaining faithful trading partners with the UK. Unfortunately, who we got is French politician Michel Barnier. When the news broke that Barnier would be appointed by Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, many Brits were outraged.

The Failure to Repeal Obamacare Is an Intellectual Failure
Why can’t we get there? The people with decision-making power lack confidence in the solution simply because doing so would require a level of understanding which they seem either incapable of or unwilling to embrace. The belief that you can legislate your goals into being has subverted the courage it would take to repeal everything that stands between us and a free market. Bluster and posturing is no substitute for understanding and vision.
